South Mountain Reservation deer population to be thinned

For the first time, Essex County will hire sharpshooters to cull the deer population in the South Mountain Reservation during a five-week program that will begin in January, officials said today.

County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo announced that the reservation will be closed to visitors and its exits blocked while volunteer sharpshooters in tree stands kill deer on Tuesdays and Thursdays in January and February.

DiVincenzo said the 2,047-acre reservation is overpopulated with deer and the animals are eating away at the reservation's brush and forest undergrowth. He said the move to shoot the deer was a difficult decision, but one he made after studying and rejecting other options.

"We just can't wait any longer," he said. "This is something we have to do."

The decision was greeted by protestors, who said the county didn't consider other alternatives. But the DiVincenzo did have the support of the Audubon Society, the South Mountain Conservancy, and the towns of Millburn, Maplewood and West Orange, whose members attended today's announcement and voiced support for the plan.

The Essex County program is being modeled after one done by Union County to control deer at the Watchung Reservation. Essex has hired Dan Bernier, director of park planning and maintenance in Union County, as a consultant for the hunt.

    volunteer sharpshooters
That has to be hunters, right? Who else would volunteer?

And Maniac is right .... they were not paid sharpshooters in Watchung ... just super regulated hunting. If I remember right, the very first year of the hunt, park police accompanied the hunters while they hunted.

It is widely assumed to be synonymous with selfishness...But the main reason why so many people in power have always disliked individualism is because it is individualists who are ever keenest to prevent the abuse of authority."
