Took the Mathews out to zone 5 today and man was it cold! There was frost on the barn roof! Well I had some birds gobbling close to the road and I was set up above them on the next ridge up. They answered the calls pretty good but once they hit the ground they slowed down with the gobbling and headed accross the street and onto the next property[wallmad]. Well I sat there for a minute to think about what to do next. I was in a good spot, a blowdown with two huge trees growing next to it and I had a good natural blind for bowhuntin and I didn't want to leave it and end up without enough cover to draw. While I was thinking I had a gobble from the ridge behind me!. I spun around and had the two huge trees directly in front of me about 2 yds away so I couldn't see much. But as I called I had two birds gobble and I could catch glimpses of them moving down the hill to my left and behind the two huge trees. When the birds were about 30 yds they went behind the first tree and I drew, it seemed like forever but it was probably only 30 seconds till they popped out, one in strut and one just walking at 5 yds! The first bird saw me instantly and putted, turned around and got back behind the tree. The second bird just cleared the tree and dropped out of strut and decided to walk directly away from me. Bad move! I hit him at 9 yds just above the tail feathers and it came out just left of the beard, he went about 10 yds and layed down[ko]
