The misinformation that gets spread on this site is simply amazing. For future reference, those of you that dont know an answer, please refrain from throwing your $.02 in.

"NEW JERSEY: Legal with restrictions. Any non-felon 18 or over may possess for your protection “one pocket-sized device which contains and releases not more than three-quarters of an ounce of chemical substance not capable of lethal use or of inflicting serious bodily injury, but rather is intended to produce temporary physical discomfort or disability through being vaporized or otherwise dispensed in the air”.
    Correct

however MACE is not legal for regular folks like us.
    Incorrect

    a certain % of capsaisin
    Incorrect

on the show manswers it showed how to make a taser out of a disposable camera and paper clips
    Illegal and just stupid

I was told by the DFW bear guy thar pepper spray does not deter black bears. I don't know whether to beleive him or not. He may just be preaching policy from the DFW because they don't want hunters carring it or he may be on the level.

BTW I was questiond once by a DWGNRA ranger about the pepper spray on my belt. He asked me if I was law enforcement and I told him no. It didn't go any further than that. This guy was a wack job though. I encountered him at my truck as I was dragging a deer out. He felt compelled to stick his fingers through the arrow holes apparently to make sure they werren't bullet holes. He seemed to get some kind of sick pleasure doing this.

My wife is manager of a local Pharmacy. She opens very early at times and closes at 10pm sometimes. I thought about getting pepper spray for her being the possibility of some dope addict making a move on her going in or out to rob the store. I decided against the PS as it has been proven ineffective against hyped up druggies.

So we got her a 9mm and she was taught how to shoot and defend herself by a retired north jersey detective friend of mine.

Only problem I have now is not pissing her off

CN and CS has been proven ineffective, OC has been proven effective against these types.

MACE is not legal for regular folks like us.
MACE is a brand name, not a substance. They do make products that anyone can buy.

pepper spray does not deter black bears
While it is true that some defensive sprays are not effective on animals, OC is. Major problem here in NJ, is that if you are carrying some sort of "bearguard" type sprays, then you are probably over the size restriction for chemical agents, which would be against the law.

Got my gf this after doing alot of research. It may not be the very best spray, but due to its size and inconspicuous look, I felt that it would be one that would be carried the most, and that ultimately is the idea.

I've been thinking about these units for my classes and would love to hear your input on it... good bad or otherwise.

I've been thinking about these units for my classes and would love to hear your input on it... good bad or otherwise.
I have not used it myself, due in part to the higher price, I really did not want to buy a unit just to "test" it out. Perhaps I should get a new one, and use the old to give her a chance to try it and get comfortable.
The main reason I got it, is because of its shape and it looked like something that she would not mind keeping in her purse at all times. I thought that this was the absolute #1 requirement.
    The pros:
    1. Doesn't look like the classic pepper spray canister.
    2. In addition to the way that it is held, it also produces a pop when discharged. This can easily convince a (not so bright) attacker that he is being shot at with a gun.
    3. Reviews say that it does not have to be replaced yearly.
    4. Reviews say that it has a very effective OC solution.
    The cons:
    1. Only 2 shots.
    2. Price makes it harder to practice with.

so it sounds like those bear pepper sprays are illegal?
According to the way the law is written, I believe that it is illegal for carry.

Yeah it is 10% OC and 4,000,000 SHU so it is fast acting and long lasting.

Im not a huge fan of the stream units and only having two shots is an issue too. The practice units they sell are expensive and arent just an inert liquid, it is a blue die... so getting hit with it is unpleasant.

They are illegal to even possess... not just to carry.
