So I found this on a law website for you. I'd venture to say that since you cannot purchase or acquire a handgun under 21, you cant possess one either. See below. Now, I will tell you that the best thing to do would be to call the NJSP Firearms Unit and have them verify but agreeing with other posters here, you're now in unfriendly territory here in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Jersey. Leave it in your free state and if you want to blow off rounds during some downtime, there are plenty of ranges where you can go and rent a gun to shoot (check their age requirements to rent, also). Hope this helps, good luck, and thank you for your service to our nation!

No person under the age of 18 shall purchase, barter or otherwise acquire a firearm, and no person under the age of 21 shall purchase, barter or otherwise acquire a handgun (unless the person is authorized to possess a handgun in connection with the performance of official duties).1 Permits to purchase a handgun will not be issued to any person under age 21, while Firearms Purchaser Identification Cards (FPIC) – for long guns – will not be issued to any person under age 18.

New Jersey also prohibits any person under the age of 18 from possessing, carrying, firing or using a firearm, and no person under the age of 21 from possessing, carrying, firing or using a handgun, except:

In the actual presence or under the direct supervision of his or her parent, guardian, or a person who holds a permit to carry a handgun or a FPIC; or
For the purpose of a military drill supervised by a recognized military organization, lawful and supervised competition or target practice, or lawful hunting when the gun possessor has a valid hunting license and has successfully completed a recognized hunter’s safety course.

Hi guy, in NJ, the legal age was & is 21, however, you acquired your handgun legally where you live as a citizen, that moved here as a Citizen, not for someone passing through, or as a military personnel-unless you hace written authorization / permission from the base CO. That'll allow you to possess it on base, but nowhere else.
Here's the problem, in NJ, the NJ FID Card & Pistol Purchase Permit, is ONLY Required to Purchase a firearm, not to possess as a Nj citizen that moved here, you are not a NJ, so Don't bring it, until you Apply for and Acquire a NJ FID Card from the State Police., that indicates that "you are using your legal address back in Wisconsin.
    It's the only way

Welcome to the Peoples Republic of New Jersey, a fair guideline is that if your a law abiding, tax paying citizen and it involves a firearm, it's illegal and your guilty. Here in Jersey your welcome to protect the nation, just not yourself. Thank you for your service.

I don’t personally know the answer on the age. But if you can’t have until 21, consider a gun storage place outside NJ. something like Gunsitters in Easton, PA. There are other places like that too. I have no experience with them but is seems like a good way to hang onto your firearm if you are stuck moving to NJ.

21, unless the weapon is a duty weapon for you when you are on active duty with the military. Then and only then, would you be exempt from the 21 year old age requirement to possess.
