It is insulting to them to hear this derogatory term - especially from a Super Moderator. Thank you in advance.

Somehow it became "the Jackson Whites over the years". I've been all over those woods throughout the years, and Reguardless of what you call the people that live there the place has a creepy vibe to it without doubt. But I have to admit I was never attacked or had bad experiences with any of the local people. I know it's just folklore. I was actually poking fun at the urban legend, it's difficult to judge sarcasm from reading it in plain txt.

You are about 10% right. Yes the term Jackson Whites originally comes from the term Jacks and Whites. That is where your accuracy ends. "Jacks" in the early 19TH century was a derogatory term for "free blacks" regardless if they were escaped slaves or emancipated with documentation. In the "Mine Area" of Ringwood; Stagg Hill in Mahwah; and in NYS in Hilburn and Suffern the freed blacks and whites of Dutch & German decent (some say Hessian deserters from the Revolutionary War) intermarried. Supposedly they have Lenape indian in their gene pool as well.

You will likely not encounter any Ramapo people in Ramapo Mountain SP because it is primarily in Oakland and on the opposite side of Ringwood from the Mine area. Ringwood SP is a different story. It ajoins both the Mine area and Stagg Hill. You would also be likely to encounter them in Sterling Forest SP in NYS.

I often talk to them if I meet them in the woods hunting. Over the years I have learned valuable information about the lay of the land in these areas as a result
