Try the trimble GPS hunt pro APP for droid.. the mapping and tracking software is very good. I like it a lot and it keeps me from needing to carry another piece of equipment. I just make sure I have a full charge on my battery...if Im going to be out long I bring along an extra battery or an external charger for my phone..

My old lowrance wont get a fix unless I'm on open water so this year I got a garmin oregon 550t on sale for about $250. It has a small screen as many do. It works good and gets a fix quickly and in places my phone wont. I am happy with the performance and features. I also purchase a yearly subscription for satellite imagery for $30, which is ok at best. In order to get download a decent size map you have to set the detail level very low and when you try to zoom in the view is very blurry. This needs improvement.

Smart move thinking about a dedicated GPS rather than an app. The Garmin units are very good, and a leader in the field, Their customer support is good as well. From experience, I would recommend against a unit like the eTrex that has only a few control buttons to do everything. Having only a few buttons requires that you do much scrolling through screens to accomplish the task you want. A real pain. A unit that has dedicated buttons for certain tasks makes the use much easier. Again from experience, I would look at pre-owned units. Get some good deals on lightly used units.
