I was In Dick sporting in Wilkes Barre and they would not sell me a shotgun because I lived in NJ.

I believe Buying from a store is different than being gifted one or buying at a show. And the one your dad has he bought it knowing it was yours from the get go, he just never told you and kept it there for you.

They already know you have guns. They have all your info when you got your FPIDC. To make it easier to find you they even make it mandatory to get a new one when you change addresses.

In Pa. they don't need such cards. Everyone has a gun.
When all else fails..... call in an Airstrike

You probably told them you planned to register it with your local PD, as soon as you got it home. And that went against their principles, so they decided to do you an favor and not sell you the gun? I'm busting your balls of course.

I have bought long guns from that same store. How long ago did this happen? It's been a while since I bought any guns from Dicks.

If you live in another state and acquire the firearm there legally and move into NJ you have to do nothing.
Any gun being TRANSFERRED, SOLD or GIVEN, not inherited, to another person from out of state must go through FFL.
That is it based on the original question of the poster being GIVEN a gun by his out of state parent who is still living.

Your Dad just gives you the gun and it's yours. It's your Dad. Whose to say it wasn't always yours?

I don't know that's why I am asking......I am wondering if it's like I bought a gun off here and both parties fill out the form and we are on our way. That happened last summer in Dick's Zone9

That could work if both the father and son lived in the SAME STATE when the firearm was transferred, providing they follow state laws.

For example, in NJ if a father wants to give a firearm (long arm) to his son (who is over 18) they must fill out a certificate of eligibility. If a handgun, a Handgun Permit to Purchase must be applied for and filled out.

In Virginia, I hand the gun to him and tell him it's his. (no paperwork)
