Some guys on here know that I work in Maplewood,N.J. and that a large chunk of South Mountain Reservation is located in Maplewood. Well, today I picked up the Maplewood New-Record and there were two front page articles about needing controlled hunts for White-Tailed Deer at the reservation.

The article goes to explain the measures of one conservationist who was paid to study the damage that the white-tail deer are causing to the ecosystem in the reservation! Simple put, this conservationist is a "Vegetarian" and stated that the only way the reservations plant and tree growth will survive is "killing" as the "Only" means to control the white-tail population, and that he studied other means of control, but that they did not control the population and most the time FAILED, costing the towns/county $$$.

Why am I posting this, well, at the UBNJ meeting the other night Jack Spoto stated that the organization was trying to obtain permission to conduct controlled Archery Hunts at South Mountain and Eagle Rock Reservation! In closing, it is imperative for the UBNJ to put pressure on Essex County and its Towns so that they see the monetary benefits of a UBNJ hunts at those Reservations!

I kept the articles in my files, as I for one, am going to speak to the Mayor of Maplewood and see where he stands! I'll keep you posted.

I'll keep my fingers crossed - it's very close to home and prime territory!

"Individualism has come in for an enormous amount of criticism over the years. It still does. It is widely assumed to be synonymous with selfishness...But the main reason why so many people in power have always disliked individualism is because it is individualists who are ever keenest to prevent the abuse of authority."

It's nice that there's some big deer there, but as you know UBNJ is a deer management program not a trophy buck club, you will be required to shoot at least one maybe two antlerless deer before taking a buck. Otherwise what incentive would the county have to put us in there. Hunting is the way to go and we can save the county a lot of money by using our program.
    Thanks for keeping us posted.

i grew up in Millburn and lived in Maplewood for 6 years. It would be a dream come true for me if they opened a deer season in the "Res". I've seen some monsters in there. But I doubt it will happen. You prob have some liberal anti's covering them self in blood protesting it.
