In an earlier post I asked for advice on what could be the reason for my small 6hp four stroke Yamaha outboard, to keep starting and abruptly cutting off each pull. We all seemed to think it had to do w the vacuum lines of the primer ball or tank vent restricting the flow of gas to the engine. After two days of frustration w it, I took it to the local Yamaha dealer and here is what the diagnosis was:

They said the problem was caused by badly containinated gas due to the ethonal breaking down in the bowl of the carb and wreaking having on the small jet ports in the carb, fouling them up badly. They had to take it apart and ultrasonically clean the carb and re-adjust everything and now it runs well but gotta make absolute certain the carb is completely drained at the end of the season along w all the rest of the fuel lines .

I'm gonna check w my relatives in VA and see if there is anywhere near where they live that sells pure ethonal free gas and to bring me a 5 gallon container up next time they come visit if so.

There is a drain screw on the carb, drain the gas out of it if it will sit for any length of time and definitely when you winterize.

I wish I could remember the site but there was a list of gas stations offering ethanol free gas in NY for boaters fishing the hudson, maybe stripers 247 hudson section

You should use marine stabil ethanol treatment.

I used the NY link as there is none listed for NJ.

Just what I thought the problem would be. I went through it. Even with gas that was only a few weeks old treated with stabil I had crap foul the jets. I run the motor out of gas after every trip. Make sure to have the right hoses for use with ethanol also.

Running out of gas still leaves gas in the bowl. Drain it to get all of it out.

I use stabil w each fill up. I downsized to a smaller 3 gal tank and dump the leftover in my lawnmower to discard at the end of the season. The guy at the marine garage said to cycle and run the motor every two weeks of non-use just to circulate the gas through it so it doesnt sit in the lines too long.

I believe premium gas contains no ethanol. Thats what I run in my engine. No issues so far.

I just emailed my cousin in law in VA and they are gonna bring me up a 5 gallon jug of pure gas when they visit in acouple of weeks. That will last me all season on my little 6hp. I feel like im ordering up moonshine or something for what I had to go through to get some freaking plain old freaking gasoline
