You should go early on opening day and just sit in your car and watch the morning's antics.

The guys are right .... late in the day, after opening day, during the week .... it is a different place. You'll meet good people who are also trying to stay away from the crazies .... and who enjoy the *hunt* , and not just killing the bird.

Birds will slip down to the wet areas in the center of the area, to get away. Keep your eyes open.... they are sneaky ... running and hiding.

    Good luck.

I dont have a dog, never really considered pheasant hunting until now. Going in the afternoon is not a problem for me. I think the worst days to hunt are opening days.

I used to go there alot. Stocking days are terrible in the morning also. I think its stocked on Tuesdays during the season but not sure. My old beagle humped a kid in a field once there.. It was priceless.. Poor kid. I thought his dad was going to shoot my dog.. He ran full speed at the kid from 300 yards away.. It was strange.. I had to hand my gun to my buddy and run over there. It is a real nice piece of property and convenient for me to hit on the way home from work. It has been 10 years since I hunted it though, maybe this year..

Good old Black River. Sound like things haven't changed there in more than 20 years... [sad]
Treat fellow hunters the way you would like to be treated.

On the stocking days tue. thurs. & sat. hunt the late mornings...most of the guys are out of the woods by 10:00 esp. during the weekdays alot of guys will hunt for an hour or two before work...On the non stocking days mon. wed. & fri. the mornings arnt bad most guys only hunt on the stocking days...but they leave plenty of birds behind...I would stay out of the fields on Sat until about noon the crowds are thinned out by then....If you want to find a place to hunt on opening day...a good bet is too walk the woods just off the rail bed...that area dosnt get stocked...but the guys will be blasitng at the birds up on top in the fields and they get pushed down into the swamp by the rail bed...they will also get pushed into the swamp from the other side of the river (the pleasant hill rd side) its a lot less crazy down along the rail bed....on opening day it will sound like WWIII up in the fields
