    First coyote seen

Never saw a coyote while hunting. Out on permit shotgun for deer. Never even looked into hunting them, he wasn't huge but had a beautiful thick coat. Do they require a permit? Or can they just be shot, as I seem to remember hearing they just need to be called into the state.

Nice! Do I have to call them in? Or check in somewhere? (Obviously I need to really read all the regulations when I get home.)

Yes you must report it to NJFG by calling in, ALL hunters should read the book(DIGEST) and understand it before the season opens

Where is it I'll shoot it for you.

If your Deer hunting and a Fox or Coyote happens by you can shoot it. The Coyote needs to be reported over the phone. Calling while Deer hunting would require a permit. You cannot call Fox or Coyote during the special season without a permit.
When all else fails..... call in an Airstrike

I'm a little confused by this thread... I thought there were certain shell sizes you had to use for shotgun hunting coyote, which wouldn't be the same shells you would use for deer. I know if bowhunting it doesn't matter but can you shoot a coyote with 00 buck? OP said he was out for permit shotgun

Yes while deer hunting they are considered incidental take and can be shot with whatever weapon/load you are using for deer.

properly licensed persons hunting deer during the Six-day Firearm, Permit Muzzleloader or Permit Shotgun deer seasons may kill coyote or fox if the coyote or fox is encountered before the hunter has taken the season bag limit of deer. However, after the hunter has taken a daily bag limit of deer, they must cease hunting immediately. Incidental hunting of coyote or fox while deer hunting may resume the following day (provided the season remains open and the season bag limit of deer has not been reached.) Only applicable projectiles approved for deer hunting maybe used to take coyote and fox incidental to deer hunting during the deer seasons described above.
