    Hey folks,

This is sort of a double post. First:

I just picked up the American Frontiersman Magazine, premier issue, Very cool! Very thick filled with dozens of articles and tales. I don't think it is a subscription deal so grab it if you see it. I guarantee you love it. I've been reading it all day!

    Second:

There is an article about tanning hides with white oak acorns, but the need to be fresh, with meat still inside. Is it still to late to find these? I know where to find them but before I make the trip I wonder if its too late in the year.

Great article on a fairly simple tanning method using no chemicals but the tannic acid in the acorns. I've wanted to try tanning a hide for a while. There is another article on a different method for those that want no fir just the hide for making boots, whatever.

The whole magazine is really based on old school mountain man life. Pick it up, bet everyone here will enjoy it.

    However, anyone got fresh acorns?

Yes its the tannic acid. I have also read that the bark of the base of a white oak tree in spring is just as good.

A buddy of mine used to tan fox hides back in high school with acorns. He had a book of indian tanning methods and that was one. Must have worked. I still have a fox pelt on the wall of my livingroom he did for me and that was over thirty years ago and it still looks perfect!

The mag also has another article on tanning hides for the leather, a solution that makes the hair drop off.

I definetly want to try this.
