Being in the pest control industry since the early 1990"s, I've seen my share of damage due to squirrels. Many years ago, I got a call about squirrels in the Martinsville Library attic. After moving a big book shelf and access panel to the attic, I crawled up inside. I immediately smelled something burning. I shined my flashlight and saw a fried squirrel that was smoldering after chewing through a romex wire. I traced the wire back to the breaker box and shut it off. Had I not shown up that day, the building could of burned down. Squirrels and raccoons are extremely destructive when they live in buildings. I read once where they estimate that 2% of "unknown" causes of fires every year are most likely due to squirrels.
