Hi, I am looking to purchase a brand new entry level rifle for home defense and occasional target shooting. I don't want to break the bank, I am hoping to find something Jersey compliant, hoping for $400-$700 range. I liked the looks and specs of the S&W MP15 Sport 2 and it fit budget, but short of modifying, etc may not be an option
I have been a shotgun user my entire life and I'm confident in using any of my shotguns for home defense, but as we see in these crazy times, having another option, and something with a 10 round capacity isn't a bad idea. I use the word rifle, but I am also open to something NON-NFA
Any advice, help, suggestions are appreciated. Once again, this gun would occasionally go to the range, but mostly sit in the safe for home defense. I'd like to not spend a fortune for something. Is it best for me to be looking at something 9MM or up, or would anything in the .22 family be an option?
Lastly, I am in South Jersey near Fort Dix, anyone know of any dealers somewhat close to me that are open? I was thinking Cheyenne Mountain Outfitters in Bordentown, any other ideas?
Cheyenne is a good place. m&p 15 5.556 is a good rifle should be around the $700 range after nics check.
I wouldn’t go .22lr for home defense, 223 5.56 is the way to go with tap ammo not fmj, fmj you’ll get over penetration and no expansion.
You can probably get a aero precision for around your price of $700 as well imo there a bit better then the m&p 15 but either one you will be happy with they’re a ton of fun to shoot to.
Lots of options. Cheyenne is a great place to start, as is Howell Gun Works on route 9 in Howell. If you find what you are looking for there are some great FFLs in central/south Jersey. I have had great experiences with Monmouth Arms and JT Custom guns in Lacey.
As Bones stated, your best bet is something in 223/5.56, either an AR-15 platform or if you prefer something a but more traditional the Ruger Mini-15. The S&W models are great rifles.
You can also build your own AR platform, it is not difficult at all and if you shop around and have some time you can di it very inexpensively.
Not intending to critique any prior posts since we all agree that 223/556 is today's gold standard, but is such immense stopping power a prerequisite for home defense? In the typical NJ home? My personal preference (aside from/in addition to a shotgun or handgun) is a 9mm pistol caliber carbine: considerably less recoil and muzzle flash (i.e. maintaining night vision...) , readily available modern expanding hollow point ammo that will not over-penetrate even remotely close to the level of 223/556 rounds traveling 2-3x as fast, subsonic ammo choices that will leave some semblance of hearing after that first shot, etc. Again, not purporting to be an expert on the OPs inquiry nor am I critiquing prior replies, and yes I acknowledge that my 18" home defense shotgun would both deafen and temporarily blind me in such a scenario, but given the terminal ballistics that many modern 9mm rounds today are capable of achieving, when coupled with the fact that we do reside in the People's Republic of New Jersey, I've always questioned the efficacy of what the leftist media refers to as a "battle rifle" for home defense. Looked at from another way, would their inherent ability to 'reach out and touch someone' at such extreme distances work against me if defending my family with an AR ever ended up being an issue before a jury? Just my 2¢...
Nothing more impressive than a 12 ga pump racking! Demands attention. I am a Collector for 25-30 years. Have Revolvers for HD and 12 ga pumps. AR is not for HD. Revolver will just about NEVER malfunction! When empty drop & P/U pump! works every time! If they get past my 2 rescue Bullies [pit & Amer bullie, both 110] Then they deal with the rest!
Don't forget , EVERY AR purchase gets on a separate NJ State Police site that you have an AR. When they pass the AR confiscation bill. You know if this jerkoff gets in again, or dementia joe, it will come!
