Then, all the more reason not to buy a used HR slug gun. I do not know, but I suspect Remington would/could better support product made in Ilion.

Do the guns made in the new plant also misfire? (mine is new)

I just checked mine, it was made in Ilion, NY.

Interesting to me is that the barrel serial number is engraved on the reciever assembly.

If this engraving is not on earlier versions of the gun, it sugggests to me that they are sorting the components and matching them in order to avoid a tolerance stack up issue.

Isn't is possible that the slot, pin, and spring are being returned to original speciations (#1)because it is possible and likely that they were originally shipped outside of specifications? In other words, they shipped defective product.
Sure is possible...but then that means that enormous part of the entire production is out of spec...I would find that to be even more worisome. However, the fact that some people have returned the guns to get fixed only to have them come back broken suggests that is not the case, and instead it is the factory specs that are out of whack somewhere.

Some of the new HR's off the shelf have been sent back for the fix at no charge. The old fix involved just replacing the spring which isn't the problem. The new fix involves cutting the hammer slot and reaming out the firing pin pocket which is the problem. When my gun misfired, you can easily see that the firing pin wasn't making enough contact with the primer and it happened with all types of ammo. The firing pin now travels with enough distance to make good contact with the primer.

BTW, the quality of Remington firearms has gone down significantly, too many complaints. The older Rem 700 was one of the best rifles around but not the new ones.

    JC,

I am guessing this is an new versus old gun/plant issue.

I spent about 30 years in QC. In my opinion, if it is indeed a tolerance stackup issue, I would not expect the misfire problem to affect an enormous part of the production and I would also expect thinner rimmed shells could contribute to the problem in some cases.

Manufacturers often assume normal gaussian distributions when conducting process capability studies, when in fact the distribution may well not be so nice and neat resulting in parts being made outside of tolerance, the errors of which are magnified when dealing with stack up issues.

My guess, this is their problem.

Mako, thanks. I hope mine has the wider bored pocket and wider hammer slot!

It would really suck to get a misfire if a great buck is in sight.
