    Wood Duck Acorns

Do wood ducks only eat acorns that fall into the water from the banks? or do they ever fly to oak trees without water to feed on land?

I would be surprised if they strayed too far from the water to feed but I could be wrong. Funny how a bird that small could digest a whole acorn!

I have never seen them too far off the water, but that does not mean they will never do as you asked. I have seen them nest in trees a couple hundred yards from water. and have pulled many of them out of fireplaces over the years in the spring time in homes where there is no water close. so I guess if there is no feed in the water, they will go to feed on the ground just like mallards and black ducks do.

Woodies eat acorns in the water and on land in swampy areas. This time of year they also like duck potato, its that green plant growing near the banks that has leaves like an old arrowhead shape. If you pull up the roots the plant produces a seed that looks like a water chestnut in Chinese food. You find a area that has a lot of this and the birds won't be far away.

As a kid we used to walk the dirt roads of the Peaslee Tract and shoot at the wood ducks picking up acorns. Obviously they prefer the easy pickens dropping into the water but they will go where the food is. Pineracer

    Deuce,
You lament the lack of "respect" shown out duck hunting, yet YOU, by far, are least respectful member on this board. Yeah, I know this is my first post, so I have no credibility. But the fact is a guy asks a legitimate question, and in one minute you come back with a snide, bullshit retort. A sophmoric one at that. No wonder guys go out and act like googans, because jerkoffs like you cant take a minute and EDUCATE others to give them knowledge to make them better hunters. The only thing you want to do is get in pissing contests about how many ducks you shoot and how great your hunts are. Typical behavior that shapes the rest of the nation's image of a person from new jersey. I'm sorry you're overcompensating for your tiny dick, but if you have nothing nice to say shut your fucking piehole.
