I am looking to rescue a beagle for the local shelter, and I am considering training her for bird hunting. I wanted to see if anyone hunts over beagles, and what have their experiences been.

I have always used beagles up until a year or so ago, to hunt rabbit and pheasant. Expeirences have been awesome. Take them out to run a few times a week and you'll whip them right into shape. Never used them for quail hunting though.

    Were they tough to train?

I have been rabbit hunting over beagles for over 15 years and LOVE THEM!! They are very hard working dogs that usually don't know the meaning of the word quit. I've never bird hunted with one, but with the strong noses they have, it shouldn't be hard to train them as long as you have the time. Good luck and keep us posted if you can!

Beagles will run pheasant just like they do bunnies. The only problem is the bird won't fly unless pressured by open ground or a fast dog.

No, my method may be different from others but all I did was put my dog on the scent of a rabbit we just came across. I started every dog off on a commercial buildings lawn toward evening. Where I live there are alot of rabbits. After that, I would just let the dog run in the high brush and through instict everything just fell into place.

I had hounds that ran birds ,the bird runs in front of them and never gets up .I have 3 hounds now and would never own anything but .

There are lots of beagle bunnies where I go in central Pa ... and, I agree with Whiskers. Beagles have a hard time flushing pheasants ... the bird will run until it runs out of cover.

I really like beagles, and hunting with them, but not for flushing roosters.

If you're not going to chase bunnies, why not look for a pointer/flusher rescue?

    Good luck.

Yes, the pheasants would always run, one reason why we always ran our dogs where there would be some boundaries such as a stream or just box them in with some man power.

Picked up my beagle pup from the Mt. Pleasant shelter Saturday. She's 10 months old, and a bit small, but once the nose hits the ground, she goes. Any suggestions for training a beagle for bird hunting would be appreciated. If there are books, DVD's, etc. that anyone can suggest, I am all ears.
