    Would like to know where I can buy Alum, other than internet or taxi supplies, for basic hide tanning?
    Thanks.

    Oh, and just for information is Sea Salt non Iodized salt and can it be used for curing?

    I am in South Jersey...not sure where Van Dike is...does local feed stores carry the stuff? Maybe pharmacies? Walmart?

    Thanks too Rich, what is better to use Ammonium Alum or Potassium Alum? And how about the sea salt question is it non Iodized for curing?

    The only reason people say to use non iodized salt is because it is cheaper. Plain old table salt will dry the hide just fine. The only salt that you DONT want is rock salt, which is not fine enough to really be worked into the skin.
