    Winter bow with my son

My oldest really wanted us to go out hunting this weekend before the season closes. So we went out saturday pm. First we had a lot of squirrel action which was quite entertaining as we were whispering about how next year (provided he completes his hunter's safety course) my son could hunt and how squirrels would be a good start and which shots he would take and so on. Suddenly a hawk squeaked and all the squirrels were gone.

Soon thereafter we had a doe with two fawns come by. I had told him we were ideally looking for a buck but may take a fawn given an opportunity. The deer passed right under our stand and I thought they would spook because I could see my son literally shaking with excitement. One of the fawns gave a good opportunity after a few long minutes and I took the shot. The shot looked and felt good and we both thought we heard the deer go down. But we could not find any arrow, blood or deer and sunset was coming quickly so we backed out.

Next morning up early and we got accompanied by a younger brother to go look. Still could not find any sign after very careful examination. At this point I was starting to despair but we spread out and did a grid search and found the dead deer pretty quickly. It had gone no farther than about 80 yards, it was my son who found it. After a mess-up earlier this season this was my first clean bow kill. I am still bummed out that we could not find it yesterday (some animal did and took a big chunk out of the hind quarter), but I think it was still a good lesson for my kids to persevere on the track of a wounded animal. We did take the opportunity to talk about wanton waste and read the hunter safety section about tracking.

Congratulations on your first bow kill and great job persevering through a difficult recovery! One time I had a fox or coyotee take a big chunk out of a doe's hindquarter only three hours after the shot and with me bumbling around the woods with a flashlight attempting to locate the deer.

I always shoot double lung bc I've seen too many heart shots have similar results. Deer going 150+ yards, poor blood trails, etc. I've seen the heart blown out of a deer with a 35 remington before and the deer still went 250 yards. Double lung for the win!
