    Fingerprint and backround check....turnaround time is supposed to be 30 days or under but realistically it is 30-60 days. One gun per permit (you can get as many as you want). State law is now one handgun per month. The permits are good for 90 days but can be extended another 90 if you dont find what you are looking for.....After that you have to start the process over again.

    If you have a record dont bother.

    You have to go to your PD and get the application and pay $2.00 per permit plus additional $ to state police for the check.

    Good luck.

    ANSWERS

    what are the turnaround time
    NJ State law specifies that your FID card and/or handgun purchasers permit(s) are supposed to approved or rejected by the issuing authority within 30 days for NJ residents & 45 days for non-residents. (N.J.S. 2C:58-3f)

    Unfortunately, actual times will vary from agency to agency (often exceeding 30 days) which incidentally is a violation of State law.

    why is the link down to obtain a permit ( its the first stickie )
    Here's the link for the Application for Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit:

    http://www.njsp.org/info/pdf/firearms/sts-033.pdf

    What does a person need to purchase a handgun step by step in your words?
    A good place to start is reading the requirements enumerated in N.J.S. 2C:58-3 et al. It's actually one of the few statutes in NJ firearms law that's fairly straightforward & clear.

    You can look it up here: http://lis.njleg.state.nj.us/cgi-bin...&x=55&y=23&zz=

    How many handguns with one permit?
    You can only purchase one (1) handgun per Handgun Purchase Permit. There is currently no limit to how many permits you can request on an application for Handgun Purchase Permit(s). Fee is $2.00 for each permit requested.

    A side note ... Unless you fall into one of the few exemptions to the NJ "One Handgun a Month" law N.J.S. 2C:58-2a(7), that limits you to receiving one handgun in a 30 day period, it is impractical to request more than 6 permits per application.

    how long is the handgun permit good for ?
    A permit to purchase a handgun shall be valid for a period of 90 days from the date of issuance and may be renewed by the issuing authority for good cause for an additional 90 days. (N.J.S. 2C:58-3f)

    This is why, as mentioned above, it is impractical for most persons to request more than 6 Handgun Purchase Permits per application.

    EXAMPLE:
    - Request 6 permits which are granted by the issuing authority.
    - You can only use one every 30 days. (3 X 30 = 90 days)
    - Get the remaining 3 permits extended for an additional 90 days. (3 X 30 = 90 additional days)
    - Any additional permit(s) received from the initial application would now be expired & unusable.

    Do you need a lin to purchase ammo ?
    Again, unless you fall into one of the very narrow exceptions to the law (N.J.S. 2C:58-3.3), "no person shall sell, give, transfer, assign or otherwise dispose of, or receive, purchase, or otherwise acquire handgun ammunition unless the purchaser, assignee, donee, receiver or holder is licensed as a manufacturer, wholesaler, or dealer under this chapter or is the holder of and possesses a valid firearms purchaser identification card, a valid copy of a permit to purchase a handgun, or a valid permit to carry a handgun and first exhibits such card or permit to the seller, donor, transferor or assignor."

    NJ FPID not needed for handgun purchase. However, you will need it to purchase handgun ammo.

    The Handgun Purchase Permit is a one shot deal, meaning you only need it to purchase the gun. After the transfer, no renewals are required.

    No need for the FID card if you're only interested in handgun(s), but if I were you I'd apply for one anyway since you're already filing the application. It only requires an addition check mark on the application & an additional $5.00 fee. Should you change your mind down the road, it'll have saved you from considerable inconvenience & delay.

    I checked my town's website and almost fell over:

    * Fingerprinting - $60.25 to be paid to Morpho Trak per their policies
    * Name Check - $18.00
    * Mental Health Records Check - $5.00
    * Handgun Purchase Permit - $2.00 / Permit
    +
    * NICS fee - $15

    OUCH!
    If only Jack O'Connor had written about the .270's effectiveness on Zombies, he might be known today as a decent gun scribe, and that cartridge might enjoy more widespread use...

    just one more reason to apply for both the FID card & Purchase Permit at the same time...

    save time & money!

    I bought my last handgun 13 years ago. Kinda glad I don't need any more.

    Sir, Applications are done M-F 8-5. If you are applying for a pistol purchase permit, you must have an interview, which is conducted on Tuesdays from 9-10. If you have any other questions, the officer who handles firearms is Officer Mart Kobin Mkobin@hackensackpd.org

    This is the response I got emailing about the times.

    Also I didn't know I needed to do an interview.
    is this a formal thing
