Denville needs a watchdog group to control town officials
Dear Editor,
The Denville Council gives our tax money to the head of the United Bowhunters of New Jersey, who was booked for illegal activities regarding deer hunting.
Marc Weiss of the United Bowhunters of New Jersey surrendered on July 6 to officials from the State Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife and processed at the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department’s Bureau of Law Enforcement in Wayne. His court date is pending.
He illegally operated a deer check station from his vehicle, using deer check tags acquired from his friend, which he then sold to the hunters making a profit from it. He also illegally kept culled deer that were never checked by the state-run deer check stations (50 in North Jersey) and used and sold tags which are only authorized by the state to keep track of the deer.
Denville’s hypocritical council are showing their constituents how they care for us by wasting our tax money by giving it to Mark Weiss to buy feed during the deer cull. The hypocrisy here is why the council did not appropriate more of our money to supply Mr. Weiss’s deer hunters with their clothing and equipment for their recreational sport? They also extended the deer hunt to four months, September to February, from last year, which was only three months too long.
By the way, in every year for which statistics have been kept, hunters have injured or killed more people in the state than deer or bears have. The hunters are violent special interest groups and represent less than 1 percent of the state population who seek to kill our wildlife for profit and pleasure. Visit

The second hypocrisy of our controversial council is issuing a new ordinance that bans smoking in public recreational areas and nearby sidewalks and parking lots. Statistics show that more deaths occur from obesity brought on by fast foods franchised in our town. Why? Really, this shows a lock of knowledge of the environmental, ecological system, health and abuse of human rights. It also shows a lack of leadership of many of our elected township officials.
To issue so many unimportant laws, infringing and abusing individual rights is ridiculous. Don’t we have bigger problems to resolve and to save our town from? Aren’t we missing the real problem here?
Attend council meetings, get involved and hold them accountable or replace them. They are not reliable or worthy of our tax money spent during these economic realities we live in.
Denville desperately needs a citizen’s watchdog group which many neighboring towns have for years and are much better at controlling their downtown hall officials.
