If you purchase an air rifle bb\pellet gun in NY and bring to NJ do you need to register it?

How would you register it in NJ being that NY just lets you buy it without even showing an FID card or provide any transfer forms?

    What is there to register?

There is no mandatory registration of firearms in NJ.

If you buy a "real" long firearm out of state, there's a NICS check, but that's it. Nothing more needs done. Why would it be any different for an air gun?(answer, it isn't).

You don't need to have an FID to own it either.

Not for a bb rile only if it is a pistol then YES you need to go threw an FFL and do the paper work for a HAND GUN PERMIT.

FOR A RIFLE BB GUN = "NO" but to buy it in New Jersey you would need an FID card.
FOR A PISTOL STYLE = "YES" it must go threw a pistol purchasing Permit.

Pellet rifle requires an FID,pellet pistol requires a pistol permit I believe.

There is no mandatory registration of firearms in NJ.
This is true, but the pistol permit requirement is de facto registration. That is, your local PD has complete information on every handgun you own that was aquired with a pistol permit.

Is it the local pd to the gun store or the pd that issued the permit? Not that it matters much, just curious.

I agree that it's de facto registration, the true goal of this socialist state.

NJ has a 'volunteer' registration policy for weapons acquired/purchased either out of state or by other legal means not in the state of NJ (gifted, etc.). That being said, I would not register the pellet/BB guns unless you feel so compelled to do so.

The PD issues the permit. When a sale is made a completed copy goes back to the local PD and to the NJSP. It is the seller's responsibility to send the copies.

How or where do you go to do this?

I was just wondering if transporting it between NJ and private property in NY would ever become an issue.

Actually just found the volunteer registration form link:

    http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/info/pdf.../sp-650i_1.pdf

Called the State Police and what should be done is to fill out cert of eligibilty in NY at time of purchase but if it wasn't done dont bother since its a long gun. They said not to fill out the volunteer reg form since that's used for when acquiring a firearms from a will or death of kin.
