They did not make me do the shotgun practical when I did the rifle test a few years ago. I did have to take the written test and shoot the rifle and muzzleloader, which they provided. I took my first shotgun test when I was ten so that was a long time ago lol.

I do know that the first time you buy your rifle permit you have to go to a license seller in person and show your card saying you passed your firearms test. You cannot buy your first ever rifle permit on line. After the first one you can buy it online from then on.

So let's say you've been hunting all your life out of state in rifle states like PA and NY.
your out of state hunting license should suffice.

Your out of state license is only good if you are a non-resident. At least that's what I was told when I moved here and tried to do it. Took the Jersey course about 3 years ago with the wife. There was familiarization with the muzzleloader and rifle, but no shooting. The only shooting that was done was with a shotgun. Also, a bow if you chose that part of the test (need to bring your bow). Bow is the only thing you need to bring equipment wise.

Took the shotgun test in the 1980's and decided this year I wanted to try varmint hunting and needed the rifle permit so....

I made a reservation to re-take the test over the summer at Range 14 (Ft Dix) and did the following:

-Completed the online study guide for firearms license (print out completed worksheets and bring with you day of test)
-Do the practical walk-through / I was excluded from the actual firing of muzzleloader/shotgun. While everyone else was qued up waiting to safely handle a shotgun/rifle/muzzloader, I was instructed to go back inside and take written exam

It took a few days, but the online license option for rifle permit/muzzleloader was activated.

    Hope that helps

I took 5 scouts for there license 3 years ago , it was more of a clinic offered by former Sportsmen Federation Prez. This is where I took the rifle part myself being I sat there for 3 days .... It was an intro to muzzy and they had a clay thrower & couple of 20 guage shotguns , they had them you shoot 3 or 4 clays. Of course it wasn't about accuracy but more safe handling of the firearm. Muzzy was a tutorial on dos and do nots .... They had eveything

Go to Walmart and ask for an all around sportsman license and I guarantee you you'll have your rifle license lol
