Just curious if anyone works in the city. I commute there now from Monmouth county but looking to buy a new home and wondering what people's commutes are like from different areas. Was looking even right over the border in pa and coming straight in rt 78 but have a feeling it might extend commute even more. Takes about 55 min with no traffic now. Unfortunately the job site I'm at right now I work 730 -330. Just looking for some ideas
I used to commute to NYC from exit 11 on Rt. 78, it sucked! Bus, train or driving, Rt. 78 is a parking lot in the afternoon, my wife teaches in Secaucus and she hits a lot of traffic on Rt. 78 and leaves at 3:10 PM. There are a lot of people who commute from Allentown, Pa (Transbridge Bus), I don't know how they do it! Good luck!
Many years ago we were seriously considering buying near Washington Crossing State Park. I worked in South Plainfield. Before we made an offer on the house I looked at the various rotes I could take get to work from there.
Then what I did was to get up extra early and drive over to Washington Crossing and take one of the routes to work and take it back there in the evening. I did this on 2 or 3 different routes if I remember.
Anyway, my commute to work was about 45 min and if we moved no matter which of the new routes I chose it was pushing towards 1¼ hours and driving into the sun on the way in and into the setting sun on the return.
If you find an area you like give this a try it could be an eye opener. By the way we never moved.
Forget about PA unless you want to spend half your life on the road hating life. I live in New Providence exit 43 on 78 and commute to down town Brooklyn. Takes me about an hour to an hour 15 in the mornings and an hour coming home. I looked further West as well and would love to live around Clinton but the traffic bogs down heavy around the 287 intersection with 78. Where I live now is pushing the limits enough. Long days become longer sitting in that damn car back and forth, just something to think about.
My job site right now is over the throngs neck bridge,my commute without traffic is an easy hour,I live off exit 25 on rt 80,with traffic it can take me almost three. I can't wait till this job is over!!!
No matter where the FROM and TO are, a Long commute can ruin you physically and emotionally especially on those all to often trouble days.
I commute to Monticello NY from Union a few times a week, 97 miles one way, and that 90 minute drives turns into 3 hours Waaay too often.
Cant tell you what to do but RPK0620 has the right idea, try that on Monday going and a Friday end of day, as these will be different for all the people that rent a place Monday thru Friday and go home on the week ends, you'll be surprised how many people do that.
Unfortunately I will always be working in NYC but when I can change jobs I will hopefully get better commuting hours . So basically it seems like 78 and 80 suck the whole way. I'm looking to buy my first home, (well second I bought a home but it was destroyed in sandy before I even got to move in) and I know Nj sucks and I don't want to live here but my job is in NYC and seems like commuting to out of state is way to long. Just trying to find something that I can call home because I am tired of renting. But I also notice that some of the areas I look at the cost of houses are insane. I do well at my job but I'm not buying a 750k home in nj
I love my commute. 11 minutes from driveway to work without hitting the 3 traffic lights and 14 minutes if I hit 1 or 2. Never hit all 3 yet. I'm at work by 6:20 a.m and home at 2:45 everyday, Monday through Friday.
I remember those days of 30 drives to work. Now, my shortest run is 40 minutes and the longest without staying over is 4 1/2 hours....Yeah, its gets old pretty fast.
Takes me 60 minutes and I'm 10 miles away! Depends where you gotta get once you're in the city. I shake my head at the commuters heading west on 78 on weeknights when I'm heading back east.
