    Deer Baiting

Does anyone feed deer year round? Is it legal to feed year round?

Ask Susan Kehoe. As long as you are feeding the racoons, I think it legal.

I only feed mine during the season. They have enough to eat over the spring and summer months.

Actually, most bait sites are drying up. People feed all season long then stop.
With all the snow on the ground right now, the deer are hungry.
Late winter ,after hunting season is a very stressful time for the whitetail deer.
What are your deer eating now? In Nj , I am guilty like most.
On my farm out west, I plant late season plots with enough food to carry them through the winter into the spring. Come spring, I will have clover and alfafa plots greening up.
I have a food source year round they can count on. Yes, I feed deer year round. I would plant food here in Nj, but , the very few remaining places I have to hunt, there is no place to plant any type of plot.

The deer are just fine with Mother Nature at the wheel.

Yea I know the deer will be fine without us feeding them through the winter. I was wondering if anyone feeds year round from a scouting stand point and if year round feeding is legal.

Feeding them year round is no different than feeding cattle all year. They know where the trough is and will continue. Scouting? I know of no law against domesticating wild animals to pose for a camera.

    Deer Baiting

Actually there is no feeding wild animals laws unless in the act of hunting ( also referred to as the baiting law )

"The Division of Fish and Wildlife receives numerous inquiries regarding the feeding of deer and other wildlife, especially in winter. Supplemental feeding is not necessary to sustain wildlife populations and the division advises against it (though backyard bird feeding during winter months is acceptable). People should keep in mind that that deer and other wildlife are wild animals and have adapted to cope to the sometimes harsh winter weather, including deep snow, cold temperatures and high winds.

Feeding is defined as placing food, either natural or artificially produced, with the intent of supplementing the naturally occurring food available to deer in their normal home range. Supplemental feeding does not include leaving unharvested agricultural crops, leaving agricultural bi-products in place after normally accepted harvesting, cutting native vegetation or artificially fertilizing herbaceous or woody sites, or baiting for the purposes of hunting." Straight from their book!
