Why is it some years we have lots of Deer drawing Acorns on the ground and others not so many?

An interesting thing about acorn production is that there are species that take one season from flowering till acorns mature, and there are species that require two seasons. In general, species in the white oak sub-genera take a single year, while species in the red or black oak sub-genera, take two years.

So you will have a year in some areas with no Acorns. Also Oak trees are air pollinated to produce the Acorns. If they flower at a time were weather has little wind or lots of rain the pollen doesn't transfer thus poor Acorn production. Now if this happens to red oaks it could be four years before they produce a good Acorn crop.

Myth= Deer prefer White Oak Acorns.

False. They just produce every year and Deer know it so you will see more Deer around these areas.

Truth Algore invented them when he found out he had also created Gorbull warming.

Acorns hit my dog "Teddy" on the head causing him to eat my homework an act that not of my own doing caused a downward spiral in my life that continues today.

Acorns spin clockwise after hitting the ground north of the equator and counter clockwise south of the equator.

Acorns if they see their shaddow....

Deer realy do like white oak acrons more because they have less tanic acid than other acorns.
Some red oaks have less tanic acid than others and so are enjoyed as much as White oak acorns.

Chestnut Oaks acorns are often ignored by deer compleatly.
Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

I find my politics and opinions of current events increasingly being judged by people who get their news if not their entire view of things from 2 guys ( and their writing teams) on the Comedy Channel there's irony in there somewhere no?

I've been known to relocate a 5 gallon pail of acorns, or 10. You can't put them just anywhere like corn. True story.

Myth= Deer prefer White Oak Acorns.
That's as wrong as putting corn in a scrape....

Whites have less tannin and are preferred by deer.

Where are you getting your information from piney....

Explain again why you would have no acorns at all in an area. If it takes two years to produce are you saying every tree is on the same cycle regardless of age. Since not all the trees are the same age shouldn't we have some acorns every year
