    Hey all,

Checking the trap line this morning, I picked up a nice male coon. Upon hanging him, I noticed a small patch if fur missing near the end of his tail, about the size of a penny. Do you guys with experience out there think this is a case of mange, or think he just got caught up somewhere? If so, I assume this renders the pelt unusable?

I've never seen a coon with Mange and the pelt should be just fine, as long as the back is not 'rubbed' .

Probably rubbed just a little from being in the den. Man, I have not seen any coon sign in months around me.

I released all 4 from the snares
    Why !?
They are going to die a slow horrible death and spread the disease in the mean time.

Mange is not temporary...It may be treatable if you take them to a vet. They will continually get worst till they finally surcome to the cold weather In the mean time they are going in and out of dens in an effort to stay warm and speading the mites to others that visit the den site or come into contact with them.

Heres a thought....If the animal lovers really want to help animals...Us trappers should take all the mangy Coyotes and Fox that we catch and give them to the animal lovers. Let them pay to have the coyotes and fox treated for mange and then release them back into the wild. !!!! Then we can catch them again, when they are healthy !!! Sounds like a plan to me !
