Posted:  30 Jul 2010 4:11 PM
I just put up my 15' ladder stand.  I pulled out the middle section an it's now at 8'.  I shoot deer close and a 15' stand puts me at a REAL extreme angle.  Opinions...Any real diadvantage to an 8' high stand?

Deer will be killed under almost every setup. I don't like yours as I have been detected by roving gangs of deer and and have better luck higher upIf its too difficult to go higher or you are uncomfortable than live with it and enjoy your time out doors. I prefer 18-20 ft. Disadvantages- easier to see you and your scent will be at ground level. Hope for a rut crazed buck

18-20 ft, damn.

im not a height person, i do about 10-12 ft. thats all i need.

been hunting from those heights ever since i started.

20', never been detected. It is a much tougher shot because of the angle so practice, practice, practice!

I shot a few doe out 12' stand, but I now go much higher. I've been busted in my 15' ladder stands on more than one occasion. I have never been busted while 20' and higher.

If people make kills from the ground why cant you at 8 foot up a tree just watch the wind and stay still.I dont like heights myself and wont go more then 20-22 feet

i love being really hi! But in reality wherever the cover is is where u should be, but  8 seems really low?

I've made numerous kils from 4-6 feet high.  Thinking that the most important thing was to get you feet off the ground.  I don't have a fear of heights issue but the arrow path through the target gets so small the higher you go.  For example...For a double lung shot of the deer that is close to the stand you have to go in very high on one lung to get the other.  Now you really need to know I hunt pretty heavy cover and will never get a 30yd shot.

Thanks for your views folks.

I'm usually 15-20. If you've got good cover around you, you could make the 8 ft work. I do think it's low though.

I think that the adequacy of stand height depends largely on the topography and cover at your setup.  But, in general, it's been my experience that higher is better.  I've got a couple of ladder stands at 15', a clamp on and a permanent stand at 22-24' and another ladder on a rock outcropping at about 30' (I only like this stand for gun hunting).  It seems to me that usually, the higher I am the calmer the deer are.  I've also shot deer with a compound bow from a ground blind - so there you have it.

No problems ever 15-18ft

It's more about cover than height.  I'm surprised that you think 15' is an extreme angle...those deer must be right in front of you.  I don't like heights either.  I'll keep in the 15-18 range, and look up at the stand from the angle the deer does.  Your perspective is one thing, but theirs is more important.  Try to look at your setup from different angles.  Be prepared for those times when deer come from an unexpected direction.  If possible, have someone sit in your stand in camo and see how it might look to the deer.

I'd rather hunt at 10' with cover and shooting lanes, then at 15' without.  And vice versa.  I don't think there is a magic number.  But you are always better off with cover than without.

It also depends on where.  In thick swampy areas, 8' might be as high as you can get.  Whereas in some mature North Jersey forests, you would stand out that low.

last two yrs shot buck at 15 ft or less....depends on cover and tree but 15 is my comfort zone

i've never had a problem at 15'

It depends on your personal preferences.  Some like it up higher so they have a better viewing to see deer approaching.  Others like to hunt from ground blinds.  Really depends on what you prefer.  Personally, I tend to only go up 12-18 feet.  One spot I hunt I am really only 5 feet of the ground because it's thick cover and the only good tree doesn't allow me to go higher.  I have shot plenty of deer from that stand with both bow and gun.  Typically, you will find a confort zone that is just high enough.  It also depends on the terrain you are hunting (slope of a hill, etc.).

Hope this helps.

its all about set-up and cover. if you are in the open ,higher is better. if its thick cover lower is beter . like in early season, when everyting is green.

my lader stand is 15', my hand in is right around 18' and in my climber i am hardly ever under 20 ft...but then again i kill more deer on the ground so it depends on the hunter

My dad hunts from about 6-8 feet off the ground in his OOOLLLDDD baker stand. He kills deer all the time.

Don't matter how high you are if you don't move, thats what they see is movement normally at any height. They can even smell you and be alarmed but not actually spooked.

The thing you need to be consirned about is your siloette thats a dead giveaway on the skyline.

Good camo that blends with surroundings and don't look like a lolly pop in a tree.

The lower you are the less movement you will get away with.

If your 15 foot up and roll your eyes and are watching the deer the entire time they are coming in they can pick that up as well as sence it a be on alert.

Theres a whole bunch of other things to learn that go along with stand heights.

My stands are 12 to 15 I don't personally like heights. I lowest i had once was 8 ft. and the deer was nearly eye level and I learned a lot from that stand many years ago in MD.

Each stand you should learn leasons good and bad what works and what don't it's called experiance and learning pains.

I only use tree stands during archery, and thats so I can see the deer coming in. Puts me above the brush, I can see out further. Also usually in Archery there are enough leaves, even dead ones, that your not silhouted Gun season, I am on the ground, brush is down, leaves are usually gone, and I don't like being spotted.

Have not hunted over 15' in the last 20 years and hardly ever get busted. If you can kill from ground blind, why go up 30'?

20'-30'
i have one 15' 2 person ladder for bringing the kids.
i love 25' they never see me. i really like 25' in a holly tree. just set one up today.
