A Hewitt family that has become all too familiar with bear sightings outside their home in the Lakeside community that overlooks Greenwood Lake said they had an unexpected visitor inside their home early Wednesday morning. Kristine Flynn told the West Milford Police department that she heard loud noises in their mud room after arriving home at around midnight. Kristine and her husband, Patrick, came upon a bear that had entered their home after tearing through the door and breaking five windows, shattering the glass beyond repair. Amid the chaos, their screams scared the bear out of the house. "He growled at my husband," said Flynn. "I would not be surprised if the bear was injured by the glass." The West Milford Police department and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Division of Fish and Wildlife officials quickly arrived on the scene, but the bear had already left after jumping a fence in the backyard. A bear trap from the NJDEP waits in Flynn’s driveway to capture any stray bears in the future. "We are not strangers to bears around our home," said Flynn. "However, we take the necessary precautions to deter them from our property -- we even bear-proof the bear resistant garbage cans!" In fact, Patrick Flynn shot and injured a bear poking at the screen door back in 2004 -- just inches away from their daughter. The bear was later seized by the NJDEP. "We have two children, and there are a lot of children in our neighborhood. When a bear crosses the line -- such as invading homes -- we react in fear for their safety." "I know I live in the woods, and I expect to see bears," said Flynn. "We have been in this house for about nine years, and I really have not had a major problem with the bears in about five years. I think it is insane that all of a sudden I find one in my house for no reason." Flynn’s neighbor, Judith Isoldi, found a very stealth bear on her patio in the backyard at 2 a.m. around four days earlier. "I have to get a dog," said Isoldi. "When I hear dogs in our neighborhood barking strangely, it’s typically a sign that there is a bear in the area." Best bear defense According to the NJDEP website, since the 1980s the Garden State’s black bear population has been increasing and expanding its range from the forested areas of northwestern New Jersey. Within the most densely populated state in the nation, black bears are thriving and there are now confirmed bear sightings throughout all of New Jersey’s counties. "One of the best ways to discourage nuisance bears is by storing garbage properly," said Captain Michael Coscia of the West Milford Police department. "Bears have a strong sense of smell, but if you cut off their food source it may deter the animal." Also, do not feed the wildlife. Food placed outside for wildlife, such as corn for squirrels or deer, may attract bears. Even bird feeders can become "bear magnets." If a bear shows up in your backyard, stay calm. From a safe distance, shout at it like you would to chase any other unwanted animal. Capt. Coscia reports that there has been no unusual bear behavior this season reported to the police prior to this incident. Residents are encouraged to work with neighbors to make sure all garbage is kept secured from bears and only accessible on designated garbage days. Isn't all shattered glass beyond repair? Not if you have a big bottle of glue, a lot of time, and you're really cheap. ![]() __________________ NRA Life Member

they even bear proofed their bear proof trash cans....so, theyre doing everything theyre supposed to and this thing broke in their house anyway????
and 5 windows?? destroyed beyond repair sounds like theyre talking about the entire window, not just the glass, sounds to me like he ripped the whole freaking thing out frame and all...FIVE of them!!!! Gee, whats cheaper...a round to kill the thing or having someone come out to replace 5 entire windows in your house!!! |

| Aw, but horcgal, you don't want to hurt the pooooor wittle bear. After all, it's sooooo cute, and wouldn't hurt a fly! I'm sure we can just sit it down, and have a good talk w/it so it can see the error of it's ways. Maybe it had a rough childhood, or grew up in a poor neighborhood. It's really not the bear's fault. | ||

I remember hearing some story about a bear breaking into someones house and the psycho groups said it was because he smelled them cooking thats why he did it!!!!! Sooooo, no bird feeders, special trashcans,
no pets, no going outside and now you arent allowed to cook inside your house??!!!! Im sure that will be what they tell these people too when they say "but we HAVE the bear proof cans and do all that is required!"....they'll get told that its STILL thier fault he smashed into their house because they have food inside. Or the "you moved into thier habitat!!"....yeah? and? animals move into other animals habitats all the time, the stronger animal GETS the habitat!!!! but, in NJ, they want humans to be on the BOTTOM of the food chain when it comes to bears. |
