Police shoot, kill black bear in Ogdensburg
DEC'S CALL: Decision made after tranquilizer darts, rubber buckshot fail to get animal out of tree in yard

OGDENSBURG — Bonnie Brock came home from work Saturday night and walked to the back door to let out her dog, Dutchess.

"But as I got to the back door, all I could see was a bear coming into my backyard," said Ms. Brock, who had just finished a 12-hour shift at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center. "It looked like a little cub, but it was strange to see in the city."

City police tracked the bear to another house, where it had climbed up a tree, and consulted with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

A city police officer shot and killed the 150-pound bear about 4:45 a.m. Sunday after attempts to subdue the animal failed, said Maureen F. Wren, a DEC spokeswoman. The bear was shot behind a home on the 200 block of Adams Avenue.
"Officers darted the bear with tranquilizers several times without any major effect," she said. "It was additionally shot with rubber buckshot in an attempt to get the bear out of the tree, but that was also ineffective."

Ms. Wren said attempts to subdue the bear spanned two hours and the decision to kill the bear was rooted in public safety.

"There was a valiant effort to bring the bear in unharmed. But when the tranquilizers didn't work, the DEC determined it to be a public safety issue and made the call. It was their decision; we just provided support," police Sgt. Fay B. Jenks said.

While bear sightings in the city are rare, "they happen," he said.

Ms. Brock said she wishes police had spared the bear's life, but understood the decision officials made.

"I am just glad no one got hurt," she said.
