Well me and a good friend went up yestersay to chase mounatin gobblers. Sorry to say BUT there arn't any turkeys in Stokes, at least the area we were hunting! We must have put at least 6 miles walking with NO luck. 10 years ago ALL ya had to do was give a call and turkeys would answer from ALL over! But yesterday was a huge disapointment to me. Talked to MANY hunters on their way out and they ALL said the same stuff, TO MANY COYOTES! Now I'm starting to think they are right? We must have drove well over 20 miles checking fields as well, NOTHING not even a hen bird cruseing? Don't get me wrong, if ya live and hunt these areas, I'm sure you get on birds, BUT nothing like the past...But then again, what is the same?? Anyways, we still had a good time. And I learned something I really already knew, MAN am I out of shape! Them hills kicked my butt! O' and I did find a great bear spot to hunt. Found this rock cave where you couldn't walk 3 steps with out stepping in bear crap! Some as big as my boot!! Guess it will be another 10 years till I go back? Good luck zone 1 hunters, YOU'LL need it!!

When you're atop sunrise mountain, it's hard to believe that it's N.J.
Beautiful!

You can thank the bears and the hard winter for the population decline at stokes.  It's still a beautiful place to hunt even if their isn't as many turkeys as years ago.

For sure.

I lived across the street from Stokes for five years and hunted it often. Tough hunting but beautiful woods and scenery.

The population is way down from years ago. The ice storm we had here about 4-5 years ago crushed them and then a couple of wet springs and were just starting to see a small rebound. It will take another 3-4 years of good nesting to hear birds all over the mountain. There are pockets of birds here and there but I don't see them roaming around like they used too. Zone 4 was dead yesterday. Did find a chewed on turkey wing with four feathers and further up a pair of yote tracks.  The further east and south you go the more birds you find.
It used to be you could drive down Rt 80 and see a dozen in the various fields. Not now

TO MANY COYOTES

Exactly. Both me and my brother in law have been charged by coyotes while turkey hunting in zone 2.

Even though you didn't see or hear a bird, I am sure it was time well spent with a good ole friend

Your ALL right! We had a great time, nothing a hand full of pain killer can't fix! LOL! I've hunted and fished in that area for well over 20 years. Still love it and the sites, just a real shame how thing have changed with the wildlife? Don't get me wrong, I'll be back if not to hunt, maybe fish, or just sit on top of the world and wonder????

The hunters that you talked to were right...TOO MANY COYOTES ! Also Fox, Coon, and other predators, combined with very wet Springs the past few years. Our Turkey numbers are way down from 10 or even 5 years ago !

Same situation on my property in NC.

We bought our spread in the mountains of northwestern NC five years ago, and you couldn't visit the property without seeing birds. Now, five years later, I had a trail cam out in the same area all winter long and not one picture of a turkey!
Coyotes moved in & the turkey disappeared.
