He is what I like to do. Find the nastiest, thickest swamp or bottomland. Put bait out in small (10#) piles about every 50 yards. outside the thick stuff. Make sure it's parallel to the swamp/thicket. The bucks don't want to move far from cover.
Hunt right on the fringe of the swamp/thicket at mid-day(10am-2pm). Deer have to feed quite often in the winter.(About every 6 hours) They will come out of the thicket/swamp get a few nibbles and move back to chew their cud. This has been a proven method for me in years past. Before baiting and even now, I hunt small oak groups close to swamps. Its not alot of feed, but enough to get them through the day. I feed horse sweet feed, corn and deer chow mix. They tear it up quick. I kick it around so they have to root around for it and stay a little longer. I have found that big bait piles only get does/small bucks during the daylight hours. Deer need to eat more then once a day. Thick browse with corn/mix is the ticket for me. Yes, the big piles with game cameras catch the big boys at night. Little piles in the right locations can draw out the bucks during the day. Another note, I don't hunt within 75 yards of any bait. I have seen bucks watch bait piles full of does (during the rut) and not even give it a shot. They are not stupid. Ryan |

buckrun, i would agree to that. if a hot does on the bait hes coming. for those who do bait do you age your deer by checking the teeth? i found in the pines bucks can get a few years on them and it makes them slicker that dog ____. during the 70's a friend of mine shot a deer with tags in its ears, tags were 8 years old and according to the division of fish and game the deer was 4 and a half when tagged in joe alberts field. deer was shot within a mile where he was tagged. theres alot of older bucks and does that hide well in those pines. __________________ Take your video camera with you, make the hunt last forever.

| I'm in your choir and don't shoot me I just been laying low on this. I am master baiter as well. Oh now I'm going to get it for that as well. I dump 300 pounds corn at a time and I'm to tired to go further with this now but I dump 50 pd,apples and 50,idaho potatoes and 50 sweet potatoes and punkins. I have a complete diner at my tree. I have deer I think crossing zones to get to me.I spend the money baiting because all I want is the shot. I want to just go there and shot and leave. I beleive in chumming. When the rut comes it looks like backhoes went to work around my bait. they go nuts. I just think we need a separate spot for baiters. | ||

I 've killed and seen big bucks at all different times at my bait piles, Maybe I'm just lucky like that . But then again I've had friends tell me that if I set up on a telephone pole in the middle of the Walmart parking lot, My luck is so good that I would kill deer deer even there. __________________ Pete's Archery Service & NJH.com ProStaff ProFile

Ha! funny i say that too, im a master baiter. i really hate baiting but yet we do it. the problem with me i bait for me, the wife, and now my two kids. yes ill do it form them and i get stuck dragging the deer out to. the good part, i bait their stand and sometime flank them. it better not to bait i think, but once a master baiter youll always bait. the past two years i could not believe the amout of corn i bought at 8 buc a bag of a hunders. __________________ Take your video camera with you, make the hunt last forever.

never hunted in pa. the past few years ive slug hunted in the catskills and taken a few nice bucks without bait. it was nice to hunt deer without using bait. its been a long time where i felt like i was stalking deer and they dont play the wind as much. __________________ Take your video camera with you, make the hunt last forever.

I am not able to get around and hunt the way I could climbing when I was young due to a knee problem from a car accident 10 years ago. I can't walk as well either so I can't stalk and walk any long distance so I go easy. I would rather hunt on my own set up like finding what I really want to shoot then go set up on him and kill him. Its much more gratifying than sitting over bait and just shooting. Its so easy its not even funny and this I admit.I like it easy today.

| Tdaly25 The locations I do work are not open for hunting.I agree some of them should be open sport hunting for everyone and not just a few A-holes from UBA.But alot of the areas are backyards .Some towns tried it, but we out produced hunting clubs 4 to 1 on the land they had 2 months prior to us coming in.Plus I make a pretty good living. | ||

i sense some tension in your answer tomski, getting a little defensive? i didnt call you names and i dont think its neccesary to call me names. i just want to understand how as a hunter you can actively work against other hunters? i wouldnt be able to live with myself, thats all. if you feel up to it you can get back to me with a good answer, but as to your comments so far you will probably just resort to a childish pathetic name calling rant. __________________ robsrodnreel.com will be down for a few months. if you need any rod or reel work done contact me at robsrodnreel@hotmail.com.

i wouldnt mind shooting in my backyard b/c im confident in my fellow hunters. as for if i owned private land, if it was a small piece no b/c i would be hunting it, but if it was a big enough piece of property i would have no problem letting others hunt on it. __________________ robsrodnreel.com will be down for a few months. if you need any rod or reel work done contact me at robsrodnreel@hotmail.com.

Tomski maybe you need this as a job, but please don't offend my intelligence by calling yourself a hunter or a sharpshooter. Do you even know the definition of "sharpshooter". And do you really shoot in the backyards of homes??. I don't think so.
Any way you are not in this for the money because it don't pay that well. I know a few individuals from the Elizabeth area that are so call "sharpshooters" and theres nothing else but "oh well lets keep is civil". I would just like an answer from you so I can understand this better. Do you do this full time?? What pleasure do you get out of it?? __________________ "Dont complain about your problems. at first i thought he was talking about ubnj when he wrote uba. hopefully he doesnt mean ubnj cuz hes going to hvae a lot of enemies on this site.
but anyway, tomski, i answered your questions now answer mine. how can you justify being a hunter and at the sametime get paid to actively work against the hunting community? __________________ robsrodnreel.com will be down for a few months. if you need any rod or reel work done contact me at robsrodnreel@hotmail.com.
