I found the same ones you have confidence in that work in Co. will work here. Always had luck with  Pheasant tail . Just lift a rock and match the hatch, just 1 or 2 sizes smaller. Someday I'll get back into it. To many irons in the fire.

Flies don't matter much right now.  A bit of a bold statement perhaps, but it is true.  All the patterns others listed plus a few hundred others will all catch trout if you know where they are in the river and place the fly in front of their mouth at the correct current speed.  Right now that is low and slow and out of the main current because the water is cold and high.  In a couple of weeks, the insect activity will greatly increase as our early hatches start coming off, and then it can be more of a match-the-hatch thing.  If you don't know our hatches, get a good book on it (check out Matt Grobert's book on fly fishing NJ waters for one) or stop by your local fly shop and they'll be happy to steer you in the right direction.  Good luck and if you had to choose only one fly to catch fish year round, make it a black woolly bugger in sizes 6, 8 and 10.

Good luck!

in NJ a piece of cheese will work.

really in NJ i do well  on a Ausable wulff or any wulff around size 12 (stock fish like it)

In NYS upper DEL. river, you must match the hatch ,size color, emerger or not.. & chant & pray alittle.(wild trout)
its a bit harder up there, but i love it.

You ever fish the Little Lehigh in PA?  Gin clear water, light tippet, sometimes ridiculously small flies and some chanting/praying helps on the natives there too!

wooly bugger is a great fly everywhere. so is a pheasant tail nymph, hares ear nymph, and elk hair caddis.

I fish the main stem & west & east once in awhile. My land is in hancock, middle of the Magicial mile.. Same thing, smart leadershy big trout.. Last year snapped off 2 bows 20"+ same day.. Another day got a 17"bow,17"brown & 12" brookie..when it's on it's good but after 1st week of June & 10000 drift boats they are smart.

It's all about the drift. No drag is what catches trout on the big D.
Half a dozen different flies and a drag free drift puts fish in my net.
April & May. No boats and tons of caddis and hendricksons. June = Big flies and Big fish too. Just more people.

i was wondering what every one uses for flys on trout in jersey,

to get back to the topic..
I use mostly black stone fly nymphs, hairs ear nymphs regular and gold ribbed, pheasant tail nymphs, march brown wet. All size 12-16 usually bead heads on the nymphs. I use occassional scuds in the 14-18 range and some tricos in the same range. I have caught some of my wild trout on some small midges in the 18-22 size range. When the weather breaks and the bugs really come out you can match a hatch on some rivers with some dries or emergers. Caddis and mayfly types of recreations.
Some other must haves in your jersey box are muddler minnows, woolly buggers, purple or black marabous, assorted streamers, all in the 8-12 range.
When you see fish rising take a chance and try the dries.. If not stick to the bottom and the small bugs I mentioned above. Nothing like out west where you can fish dries most of the year and site fish all day.. Good luck and tight lines

Take a really fine screen wade out into the water and dip the screen for like a minute. then lift it on an angle.  This will tell you what kind of flies are in the water.  This time of year stone flies are about the best thing to use. If you don't know how to tie then take not of the flies on the screen and go down to your local fly shop and by whatever looks most like what is in the screen you dipped.

Deathfrom..
You are so right about the drift.. 1 bad cast/ slap the water. Over a rising fish.. It's done.

Shannon's fly shop in Califon publishes a weekly report about what's hatching. I don't fly fish a whole lot, but when I get the itch I always check their site out before hitting the water. They know what they're talking about.
