NJ Hunter / New Jersey Fishing / Fishing / Need some help on where to take a 3 year old trout fishin
Posted:  09 Mar 2010 10:12 AM
Ok my Nephew who is three, has been asking me to take him fishing since late fall.. Im kinda perplexed where this came from but now that hes asking I really want to take him trout fishing.. Im hoping to try and get him out for some crappies and perch but i think the ice on alot of lakes may be there into trout season.. any way My question is do any of you guys know of kid freindly places to trout fish that may be a little lighter  on the crowds.. Im sure his patience will run out quick.. he is only three after all. but I would like to get him out for an hour or so and hopefully get a fish on the line for him.. you guys can pm me if you want to keep the spot on the down low. I promise ill keep my mouth shut..Thanks guys.

Normal spots, just go at about 9am or later. Once the first rush is over you should find some banks opening up.

Spend a few bucks and take him to a stocked trout pond.  Check out Big Brown and Paradise in PA.  You'll see and catch fish and he'll remember it as the greatest trip.

I've been fishing opening day with my 8 yr old daughter for the past 4 years on the Paulinskill and Musconetcong.  Without exception there are allways adults who act like they're 4 or 5 and will cut your kids off, tangle their lines and make opening day frustrating at best.  Even though my daughter allways caught a fish or more, I don't think it's worth it.

If you have a boat, that's a different story.  But at only three, a boat will likely be way too cold as well as potentially dangerous for the little angler...

Good luck and have a great time!

My father used to take me to Go Fish outside of newton. I loved it. No crowds plenty of fish, a great place to learn. It can get pricey because you have to keep and pay for all the fish you catch  (I musta cost the old many hundreds!)but totally worth it.

let me tell you, my father did this for me, he would tell me he is going to take me to his "good fishing spot" i didnt know otherwise, and it was the best thing ever, caught my first fish on my own and i was four, maybe bring the video camera, i have that film and it means the world to me.....young kids cant sit long and like action, then my father would also take me out to do some real fishing but i had my younger brothers to play with while we were "waiting"....just remember not to put too much on him and put a fish on a line for him and he will be hooked for life....i have been hooked since

Thanks guys.. I kinda like the pay to fish idea, but I also feel I might be robbing him of the learning experince. But who am I kidding he is only three.. he is probally a little to young to deal with crowds.. I think I may take him to pay to fish and in the summer try to get him into some bluegils at some local ponds..

I took my kids there when they were very small. They will get a thrill out of it .... it won't take long.

Yup, it can get a little expensive.

Spring Lake in Spring Lake Monmouth County is stocked with trout. They also have a contest for the kids. There is a playground next to the lake and you can walk across the street for some pizza.

There are a lot of other fish in the lake also

There are a lot of little ponds in Central Jersey that are stocked with trout and would probably provide a similar experience.

Spring Lake opening day has become too crowded the last few years.  However, L & H in Wall usually has a fishing derby opening day which is much better for little ones.

Keep one thing in mind, a three year old will most likely be done fishing in about 20 minutes!  Mine is now four, LOVES fishing, but after about 40 minutes, he's more interested in chucking stones into the water!  I only wish I was that age again!

take him to the open house at pequest fish hatchery. the kids can fish in the pond, and there are staff to help him along. they can also get a handfull of pellets and feed them which always gets the kids excited. its also before opening day, so it will be a good learning experience for him too.

Scrub, take him to the Pequest Open House at the end of the month. Willie can sign him in and he can fish in the trout pond with the rest of the kids.

Kids have fun catching anything.

Sunnies in a pond somewhere.

Time spent together is the important thing.

Yep. Plus he grab a hot dog and a soda afterwards. It's a perfect set up for the kids.

and
The PBA local 10 in Long Branch has a derby on April 17 at lake Takanassee. The PBA does a bang up job on this one. Gifts, prizes, and food.
Monmouth County Federation & the Central Region NJOA will be helping out at both derby's.
