NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / How To / Snowblower Issue
Posted:  26 Feb 2010 1:00 PM
i have a question for you guys.  I have a MTD Yard Machine snowblower with a 8HP Tecumseh motor.  I changed the oil yesterday but problem was happening before that even. its starts up great and runs good but it stalls every once in awhile as i'm cutting through snow.  if i let go of throttle it wont stall but if i keep throttle going it will.  what do you think is causing it?  fuel filter? carb?  i dont know squat about motors so i'm asking here.

and for all the guys who cry about the lounge, i will move this there as soon as i get some advice.

Did you check th air filter?

The questions are: "Is your carb tuned correctly?"
There might be an online owners manual for your model of snowblower.
In it there might be a section on how to adjust your carb. It could be one simple screw.
Did you have old gas in it?
The fuel additive product "Seafoam" could improve your snowblower performance.
I am aware that the bottom 4" of snow were wet and heavy, but your blower should not stall.

I was thinking the same. Is it soaked with oil?

could be a fuel problem

this thing has always run great.  never a problem.   only a few years old.  gas is new.  this just started doing this yesterday.  i did not check air filter.  i'll check that as soon as it cools down.

If I understand him correctly it will stall with more throttle. Sounds as though it is getting too rich. Before I adjusted any mixture screws I would make sure air filter is clean.

if you left gas in it from last year the ethanol will turn to jelly. even stabil  will not save it.  i took the carb bowl off of mine and cleaned it out.

Tecumseh motors are notorious for float and needle problems in the carb.  Due to the design old gas sits in there and turns to varnish, eventually ruining the float.  You could pull the bowl off the carb and see how it looks.  Not sure how you engage the choke on your blower but if it is choking as you run the throttle up it may want to stall as you described.

I bet it's bad fuel. How old was the gas before you put the new gas in?

Check the fuel lines and make sure they are tight and you are not drawing in air when you are at high spead.

i was telling him to check his air filter for his problem.......

my problem was water in my fuel today....my air filter was fine

Check the fuel cap vent, if it gets clogged its like holding your finger over a straw, this will show up more on higher throttle fuel demands more than low throttle settings.

im dabble with small engines it sounds like its running rich check filter adjust  jet screw while running and clean spark plug it may be fouled rich running motors usally occurs in high alt and cold weather

Do you start it with the choke open and close the choke as the engine warms up?

IF there is indeed a fuel filter .... a clogging fuel filter will cause stalling when throttling up.

So it bogs down under load.

How is the spring on the governor arm?

I have to agree the carb probably needs a cleaning.  Since it is still running try adding Seafoam to the fuel (you can find it at any autozone, Walmart etc.. )

I also have an MTD Tecumseh 10hp that's 13 years old. I always use stabil during the season but after that always drain the gas out as well as pushing the spring button of the carb bowl to allow any remaining fuel out.  To date no problem with its running.

I just drained the gas tank out today betting on no more snow  at least not another storm to use the snowblower.

Good luck Woj

i had a staling problem with a log splitter with a briggs engine and by using a heigher octain gas mid or high test not regular did the trick.

If it is foam try a litle gas, wring it out and let it dry. When you can get a new one.

Mine stalls when I'm trying to throw too much wet snow to fast, the impeller binds up. Also happens when I suck up bushes, vines, wire line and such.
