NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / General Comments & Information / Places to pattern a shotgun?

Does anyone know anywhere in or around north jersey where you can pattern a shotgun?

I know the Bullet Hole in Belleville will let you pattern a shotgun, but the range is only about 20-25 yards or so.

I don't think its allowed at the NJ WMA ranges, not sure about the PA state ranges.

Any advice?  Thanks!

you can pattern at Clinton WMA. I'm heading there this week to pattern 3 shotguns if I get the chance.

You can pattern at Flatbrook also, just make sure it's at the rifle range and not the skeet/archery range. Remember if you go to any WMA range be sure to bring your license and proper protective equipment.

Are there patterning boards there?  Or do you need to bring your own setup?

Bring your own.

Bring you own boards to Clinton and Flatbrook though I did see a setup at Flatbrook in early January.

For $10 you can make one of these out of 2 inch PVC pipe, minus the PVC glue which I already had.  The upright pipes are not glued for easy dis-assembly.  Just use two sticks that drop into the uprights and staple poster board to it.

Not entirely true.  Depends on what your patterning.  Fine shot for turkey could and should be patterned at the shotgun/skeet range, read the digest.  Buckshot at the rifle range.

Asking the other trap shooters to cease fire while you check your targets multiple times is poor range etiquette though and I think that is what he was getting at.

Can always drive up to Davis Sport Range in Goshen NY.  I went last year to pattern my turkey gun  but only because I had a free saturday and it was raining that day so decided to go indoors. At least I didnt have to walk back and forth putting up new targets after each shot.

Not true. The WMA range rules indicate that the trap range is for trap/skeet shooting only-no patterning

As for the rifle range-the range is for slugs and small caliber rifles only-you can patter buckshot there-but not fine shot--though I seriously doubt anyone on the rifle range would give you a hard time.

Also remember at the Flatbrook Rifle Range you can actually go to the laft of the shooting benches(looking down range) and set up there with your own gear-that's what I do/ I just bring a folding stool and small camp table and am ready to shoot regardless of how many people are at the range

From the DFW website ....
Quote:
The following types of ranges are available on designated WMAs statewide:

Shotgun Range: for use with clay birds and the patterning of fine shot (lead-free only shot at Assunpinkand Colliers Mills);

Archery Range: approved backstops at select ranges, no broadheads allowed;

Muzzleloading Rifle and Shotgun Slug Range: for sighting in with shotgun slugs or buckshot, .22 caliber, rimfire rifles and muzzleloaders; no other firearms allowed.

- I, too, think it would be bad range etiquette to try to pattern while people are shooting clay targets

- As far as "no other firearms allowed" at the muzzy range, I think they are stressing that centerfire rifles are not allowed.

Same can be said for the rifle range.  Guy shoots one load and wants to go out and change the paper, and so on.  Happens all the time.  From my experience it's easier to pattern fine shot at the clay range.

I have patterned turkey loads at both. Once I asked a CO and he specifically said it was ok to pattern turkey loads at the shotgun/muzzy range.

The Bullet Hole is good to get your aiming system lined up, but it is nice to know the effective range of your pattern at longer ranges.

Personally I don't enjoy the recoil of turkey loads. I know the pattern reach of my gun from years past so everytime I re-install the red dot scope I use my laser bore sighter. The laser comes up pretty close to the actual center of the pattern at 40 yds. This varies somewhat with different loads. For "Dead Coyote" loads I have to aim a little low when using the laser sight in device. For "Winchester Supreme turkey loads the laser is dead on.

Ive been to Davis a bunch of times with my rifles and its a nice range.  But their targets are pretty small.  Did they let you attach a large patterning target?

Yes.  I used several poster board targets.  The range official was only concerned about me using a Caldwell lead sled because it might rip the carpeting of the table.  It didn't and wound up patterning 2 guns that day.

Bring a hammer and a 10" spike... punch the holes with the spike and put wire in the holes.  I welded a bunch of target stands for class... some sink into the sand pretty easy and take a 1x4... others take 2 1x2's and the wind at fort dix can blow them over so I started using spikes and they work fine now.  I found out through experience, the spikes are the only thing you can put in frozen sand

It's probably better to use wood, just in case you miss.
