This shed hunting thing....never did it, any advise for the first timer...I would assume one is to look down and follow the deet trails.

Firstly, it may be to early depending on where you are at. Down in Monmouth county, we are still seeing lots of buck, many big with their racks.

Go places where the deer tend to herd up in the winter, although with this warm weather, they really have not done that as much as in the past. Down by me, the deer move into thickets between and around houses.

Its not easy, but usually once you find one you will find others. Eve from year to year, you will find them in the same spots. Go slower in thick stuff, fast in wide open - I have never found allot of them, but have a good freind who spends allot of time in late February and march and finds allot of shed, including one side, that scored 81 inches as a 5 -

Bottom line- just enjoy it - think of it as going out for a nice walk

It's great advance scouting. Try to find bedding areas.

njhunter.
I was in colliers mills last week looking, didn't find any.  but it's a little early yet. that place is so thick, you almost have to step on them to find them.
                  Good luck

The shed I posted earlier today was found in Zone 18, but I don't believe it to be this years.  And yes, area is so thick, you do have to nearly step on them to find them.  I spotted this recent one from about 5 feet away!

BowhunterNJ,
Where did you post the picture?   I haven't seen any pictures from you lately, did you pull your cams for the season?

This snow will start to stress the deer herd, which will cause allot of them to drop the head gear. keep an eye on where the deer are herding up - if you have the time- walk the trails and find their beds. Then when the snow is gone, go back to those same spots and you will find the sheds - at least that is the theory.

I am seeing groups of bucks together, and my father in law shot a 7 point last Friday - which was running wtih 9 different bucks - and was not the buck he had intended to kill.

best place to find sheds are county parks and reservations!

Out looking again Saturday, covered a lot of ground(thick cover/swampy areas).  Still no luck. Man are these things hard to find!!!  Anybody having any luck?

Mike, I wasn't out this weekend, still in FL as we speak.  I'll be back out next weekend, hoping to find some fresh sheds from this cold snap.  Can't imagine bucks still carrying after this, has to put enough stress on them to have them finally drop.

Mike, just to add to the thread for our shed finds...since you and I seem to be the only ones looking in Zone 18!

Matt,
Thanks.   I'll be out again tomorrow.  I covered a lot of ground today, mostly down in the cedar swamps. what type of cover did you find your shed in?
Posted:  25 Feb 2006 6:29 PM
I found this one literally 50 yards off the road...he was in a generally thick area but not where I expected to find it.  Try around areas where they deer have avoided all hunting season and now can get to for whatever food has been left (due to hunting pressure or the such).

I went out today. Found five sheds..Yesterday found a good 5 point shed of a buck i have pics of..He is gonna be a shooter next year

Was out all day today, no sheds.  Some rubs but thats about it!   Oh found two treestands too, same guy not too far apart...baiting both areas.  Also saw some turkeys right by my truck coming out around 5:00PM.

drome, you hunt in the Mill on the border of lakehurst or IN lakehurst (I know some sections have clubs or permits to get on the property)?
Posted:  26 Feb 2006 8:37 PM
I hunt in lakehurst, on private land my family owns.

I've been trying to find turkeys for weeks now.  Didnt get out this weekend but I'm going to try again on saturday.

Turkeys have come on real strong in Zone 18 last two years especially.  Never saw any, now I see a ton.

Here's a trailcam pic from earlier in the fall...they are certainly around!
