I hunt Colliers Mills on the 539 side...I saw a ton of turkeys in there this season.  First day of 6-day I must have had 50-75 of them run by me on a drive.

I was out most of the day also.  no sheds "yet" (thinking positive)  I did find a dead doe and grey fox. I also found two stands in the same tree, with a trail cam close by. the cam wasn't even locked to the tree, just tied with rope(what were they thinking) other than that it was a slow day in the woods.

Mike...you found a grey fox?  Dead?  I walked up on one sleeping in the snow back in December I believe.  Boy did he turn inside out when I made a cough at 10 yards from him!

Not sure what that guy was thinking not locking his cam. Not very smart...even when you lock them, its keep honest guys honest.  Glad you stayed honest without the lock!

Funny my buddy said he found two stands in the same tree in that wayyyyy back spot.  Looked set up to film or something, he said guys got there in winter bow or late December because he was back there in mid December.  Didn't mention a trailcam though.

Hang in there, you'll find a shed...they are few and far between but if you put enough miles on, you'll eventually walk right up on one.  I always mean to take a picture of them as I find them...but as soon as I see them its like I just found $100 bill laying on the ground in the woods and snatch it up instantly!

Actually, now that I think about it...I saw your parked off Hawkin today Mike.  Believe it was your truck...red/burgundy ford with a cap?

Matt,
WOW that is a great picture. this whole area has really taken off with the turkeys.  I go up to the Gap every year, but I should hunt here around the house. save a lot of time and money!!!

Matt,
the fox was curled up like it was sleeping, but it was dead as dead gets.
Sound like your buddy is in the same spot I am.  that was the first thing I thought when I saw the two stands(filming) I've been back in that spot for 8 or 9 years now. always lots of deer after small game season opens up.

you guys ever feel like showing someone turkey signs let me know.  I've been looking all over the place and either I'm missing something or unlucky.
Posted:  26 Feb 2006 10:42 PM
drome,
dont confine yourself to just your private ground, turkeys cover a lot of ground. cover as much ground as you can, and you will find what you are looking for.
Posted:  26 Feb 2006 10:43 PM
Yeah, check out the oaks...alot of turkeys scratching in the oaks right now.  Someone mentioned breeding grounds and whatnot, I have not clue how to identify them.

The 2 stand set up is a father/child most of the time. I have a 2 stand set up like that with a cam, but it is on private property! Hope you guys realize that shed hunting does not give you the right to tresspass. You can be ticketed the same as if you were hunting on someone elses property.

Didn't mean to come across harsh. It's just I have pics on my cam of a guy(propably shed hunting) on one of my posted private pieces looking at my cam. He is in camo pants with a gray hooded sweatshirt and a backpack on. This property is well posted and no one should be in there. On a good note he dinn't take anything.

not harsh words at all, I have private property and I feel the same way.  Its not that I dont want people hunting on the land, I just want a safe place for my little guys to hunt as they grow older.

John, I hear ya...it did sound like you might have thought we were on your piece though.  This obviously isn't the case, the area Mike and I are talking about is on public land, we both know the section of the public land where these stands are.

But yes, people clearly should not be trespassing for anything, including shed hunting.

Out again today shed hunting/scouting.  Didn't find any sheds or turkey sign. very slow day in the woods.

bowhunterNJ - where do youhunt - and where was the cam that had the guy on it tresspassing? I know of a couple of guys that cover lots and lots of ground shed hunting (and scouting)and they pretty much go where ever they want - they start the day deer season ends - and are out almost every sat and sunday through april - they use it tofigure out what made t through the year - and where they might want to go next year - posted or not.

kah1993:

Which trespassing issue are you referring to?
The only one I had issues with was on the only private piece I hunt right now, and that is in Zone 16.

Anybody still looking in zone 18 ?   I was out looking today, with no luck as usual.
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 7:15 PM
yes I was in zone 18 and zone 16, no sheds
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 7:17 PM
I was out today, nothing.  Mike I was all over the other side of that piece, I found literally 9 portable and ladder stands, one feeder and several other bait sites.  Unreal.
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 7:27 PM
Matt,
I was all over the side You and I scouted.  went to the little lake in the middle, looks good. found a dead buck (bones) probably from last year.
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 7:34 PM
Mike that is where I was, coming in from the other side/way/"main road".

I wasn't far from those lakes, the feeder was just south of them.  Prob why it looked good

Stands were all on the backside, mainly all off a gun club cut (old one).
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 7:44 PM
Matt,
    Going out tomorrow?
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 7:50 PM
Debating, to be honest I'm pretty discouraged at this point.  Feel like I've been all over the woods there and just keep running into stands and bait piles and feeders.  I was literally 1.4 miles (of trail) in when I found the feeder, but about 0.75 miles from the way you came in (way we came in last weekend).  Feeder guy is coming in from the other road that leads back from the northeast.

I'm pretty shocked honestly, never seen so many guys or so much sign of guys.  It looked OK back there, but nothing really blew me away.  The "oaks" were disappointing, alot of scrub oaks and sawtooth, not so many whites...and a ton of pine.  Very thick though.

I'll drop you a line if I'm in the area, again not sure what I'm doing.
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 8:02 PM
I'm really discouraged too.  BUT I'm still looking you can't find the sheds or good spots from home.
Posted:  18 Mar 2006 8:06 PM
I am going to the tax office this week to get names and maps of the areas around here.  Will be knocking on doors next week/weekend.  Been scouting them out with aerials and topos for a couple weeks now, today was pretty much my last major scouting effort at the mill.  If I find signs of guys 1.25 miles of walking in and everywhere along the way, its time to go elsewhere!

I may still hunt there next year, but right now I'll exploring other options.  I can always fall back on my old spots and just bear it out if other guys wind up in them.  Just a matter of time, I really expect next season to be even worse in respect to number of hunters and bait piles.

Good Luck, keep in touch.

I haven't found any sheds in 18 yet this year.....walked in the mill, Mercer park and Washington park and no sheds.......
