NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 6 / Hunting Allamuchy

I'm hunting NJ this winter for the first time.(I'm from NY) I would like to hunt Allamuchy St. Park. I've been staring at maps trying to figure out parking and where I'm permitted to hunt. So unfamiliar with the area, but I need to hunt...Does anyone have any suggestions on parking and access to the woods. I don't mind walking.   Do I need any special permits to hunt in the park for winter Bow?

I've parked in the lot off of Deer Park Road (off of CR517). I hunted it last winter and saw lots of sign but no deer. If you follow the trailhead off to the right as you enter the parking lot and then go right off the trail (downhill toward a river), you get to the edge of the SP, and there was a guy who had set up a feeder on private land right across the river. I tried several times to intercept deer as they traveled to the feeder, but no luck. Maybe you'll do better.

I've taken a bunch of deer out of Allamuchy. I used to park in the rest area off of Rte 80 and walk in from there. It's been about 3 years since I've hunted it and heard you can't park there anymore. Not sure if it's true or not. Nice woods and used to see lots of deer.

just a little hint Allamuchy is in 2 zones 6 and 8 depending where you are. if you want to hunt Zone 8 look for a road called Old Waterloo Rd look where it intersects train tracks and go from there i guarantee youll see lots of deer there

Thanks for the info.  When I purchased winter bow license, I asked for zone 6. Now looking closer, my license doesn't indicate a zone. Should my winter bow license be specific to zone?

No such thing as a winter Bow License, That is you 2010 license good anywhere all year. Comes with winter and fall tags. You don't need a specific zone permit till Oct 1st.

Thank you, I thought that was the case, but its good to hear from someone. So I'm done reading and re-reading this NJ F&W Digest. I'm done looking at maps of the zones and zone descriptions.. Its time to get in the woods and hunt. Thanks to all, and good luck out there. I'll post the results, if any of my first NJ bow hunts.

You can say that again! When I first started hunting there I would see herds of 20 to 40 deer.

Now I'm lucky to see 4 or 5 deer together.

I don't think the 2 doe a day limit from September to the middle of February works so well for public land.

I hunted zone 6 by Stevens state park off of water loo rd.  It's been a tuff year in that area not much for deer anymore I took a few nice bucks the last few years. I haven't taken one deer this year at all in that zone if you hunt there good luck.the other side of the mountain is much better on the zone 8 side.

I hunted for the first time in about 20 years the Deer Park area off 517 one day during 6 day this year . It used to be real open allowing long muzzle loader shots. It has become very overgrown

I hunted the north side of 80(used to park in that rest area) by the boy scout park for 20 years, havent been back in 5 and really miss that walk. Sad to hear that it's been getting hit so hard. It was always an adventure going up there and some serious long drags out...

I believe there are some spots to pull over and park up off of Rt. 206 on the southbound side, north of Rt. 80

the old dirt bike races and all the dirtbikers killed that place.  used to be my best spot.  but all those bikes in there just killed it.
