I have a situation I need advice for. There is a guy who hunts the same patch of woods that I do. Seems like a nice guy and just likes hunting. Well on Thursday, I was hunting there and it all of a sudden sounded like a war zone. It seems that he invited his friends to do a drive through those woods and didn't know I was there. He apologized and said he never would of done it had he known I was hunting and invited me to go and do drives with him and his buddies in the morning. He also said he had to go back to those woods in the morning and retrieve a Buck that his buddies shot. Well, it happened to be decent at best 8 pt that would have been beautiful next year and one that I let walk twice. Was not happy about it. I told him I hoped that it wasn't that Buck because we both would have had a chance next year at it. Ok, so Friday morning I'm with him and his friends because Id rather hunt in the property with them then not and I go to my stand. They drive all the deer right to me and I get a doe. Great, but I would have rather not even been there or shot anything but felt like the old "If you cant beat em, join em" feeling.Anyway, long story short is, it was that small eight (sux), and his buddies said that it stunk and the coyotes got too it over night so they just cut the head off and left the rest. I got pissed. It was 19 degrees out and I'm pretty sure that there was something they could have salvaged. He agreed but it was left at that. He will be there for muzzleloader, but I'm pissed they left the carcass. He said the remains will be gone in a few days so it's no big deal but I'm a little suspicious that they just wanted the rack and were too lazy to drag the rest out. I have not found the remains so I cannot confirm, nor deny those allegations. Now I have to hunt with a rotting deer in the woods. Is it going to spoil my hunt and would you be pissed or am I over reacting? Just wanted an opinion before I burn bridges. Thanks __________________ Fish for Kings in the Famous Kenai River

I saw 12 different does on Saturday that walked right past a pair of gutpiles that I had left on Monday. The carcass won't spoil your spot one bit. I'd be more concerned with the ethics of the guys that you are sharing the land with. From your account of things, these guys sound a little shady. __________________ "Cuz huntin' ain't catch & release."

Yeah, juries still out. Problem is, the guy grew up in the neighborhood and I didn't. So I'm kind odd man out. Pissed about that 8. They even said, they thought it was bigger! I'm sick of Jersey hunting. I'm debating on just going out to Illinois or something for a week and not wasting my time here! __________________ Fish for Kings in the Famous Kenai River

| If enough coyotes got to it, there probably wasn't enough to salvage. I agree with you...I have a tough time believing it 'stunk'...as it was cold....at least he invited you to join the group for a drive.....and you did get some meat out of it....maybe you could confirm with him if they're gonna be driving with muzzleloaders...if not...then the woods should settle down for both of you...when it was just you and him, you probably could've gotten on the same page as to what you were going to shoot...but, when drives are taking place...ususally...all bets are off | ||

| Jersey sounds like your on some semi public land. I had the same thing happen to me this early bow season. I saw a 7 passed on it, told my friend about it and he shot it the next day. I got mad at him but then he made me realize its not my land, why am I practicing QDM when you dont know who else is here and your in a state/zone where the majority of people have its a brown its down mentality, and unfortunately he is right. That is why Im going to try and get into a big WMA this Jan with my new smoke pole and see if I can connect. I had a talk with my brother a non hunter who basically said "Why are you getting stressed out over this? I thought you hunted to cut some stress. Sounds like its more stress trying to find private land, loosing it, dealing with the public on state land. Your better off doing a trip every year and enjoy yourself.....i think he is right. | ||

jersey, i understand your concern and it sux when your doing your best to pass on deer and someone blasts it and just leaves it. Grits hit it right on the head, the carcass wont effect your spot, but the fact that it was SO cold and the deer should have been fine till the next day. Just taking the rack is really terrible, but again you cant know if the deer was destroyed passed the point of salvage from the yotes unless you see it. Good luck. __________________ You can do a lot more for the environment by carrying a rifle then carrying a sign.

In my club we're all in agreement to drag the deer and gut in one spot. Apparently accordingly to the guy that suggested it, who's hunted the property for many years the hunting has improved since they've been doing that. __________________ Treat fellow hunters the way you would like to be treated.

If you pass up deer in nj you have to realize that there is a reasonably good chance that the guy on the next property wont. You can't get mad for these guys shooting a deer you didn't consider ready to be killed.
I passed a basket 8 a half dozen times with the bow this year and on Monday morning another member of our club dropped him. Was his biggest buck to date and he was elated. Thats the way it happens sometimes. __________________ I love all of God's creatures. I believe they should all have a place in this world. Right next to my mashed potatoes.

Yeah, thats the problem. It public land and my private land borders it. I'm screwed, but the guy says he wants the bucks to grow up. I guess he cant control his goons. I should of whacked him when I had the chance! __________________ Fish for Kings in the Famous Kenai River

Now that you guys have some history share phone numbers and formulate a plan to hunt the property. If nothing else you will know what his plans are and you can hunt accordingly. __________________ "I'M YOUR HUCKLEBERRY"

| Wish it were different, but that's NJ hunting. The best chance of shooting a good buck is during archery, and that is when I work hard. Everything changes when gun season opens. | ||

I'd say have a chat with the guy and talk about hunting plans. No harm can be done there. Since it's public land they have every right to do whatever as long it's in legal limits. Unfortunate to have the buck taken without being meat harvested. At least the yotes got a meal of it. Anyway..I would ask that if he was going to drive, at least do it in permit season or the ending of six-day firearm. I hunt in PA every year and drives start after opening day. Infuriates me at how unethical and a bunch a jerks that do it but like I said, Its' public land so expect the unexpected. __________________ Hunt to live. Live to hunt.
