Each town has a no discharge rule which covers both gun and bow. The only towns where hunting is permitted is parts of Mahwah and Oakland on 5 acres or more of land. However, very few of these around.  Bergen is really just too populated although there are some large land tracts and golf courses that could sustain limited bowhunting.

Some of those larger tracks of land could easily sustain bow and gun hunting. Campgaw reservation for example. Also, the park on 202 right next to Sun Valley farm, that land runs all the way up to the state land by Bear Swamp lake. Sun Valley Farm now consists of 300 acres along the Ramapo river, however, Fred Wheran, proprieter of Sun Valley Farms donated 500 acres to the Bergen County Parks system. That land he donated was all huntable when I was a kid, both bow & shotgun. It's also my understanding, that upon his death, he planned to donate the remaining 300 acres and his house to the Bergen County Parks system. Funny how once the county gets their hands on the land, it is no longer suitable for hunting, LOL.

Appreciate the honesty and for making my point - neither deer came from an open park lands. Hunting next to a park, which does not allow hunting - I have had a similar situation, and know its aboug as good as you can ask for (had permision to hunt on a piece that right up against Camp ArrowHead in Marlboro).

And to my point earlier = you still have to connect -and spend the time, and hunt smart to kill the big ones! I had a similar set up - and did not kill deer that big. But come to think - he has the state record typical - with the next closest being in the 160's - so maybe I dont feel so bad.

Good discussion Rich - I plan to stop in sometime and meet you - I live pretty close

Sun Valley Farms
I went there years ago and I spoke to the care taker, he didn't care I hunted, but he also didn't want to get fired, and I didn't want that to happen. He took me on a tour of that Farm, what rubs I saw, and he showed me some really really nice racks. He knew guys tresspassed and hunted, but he never had the time to go looking for them. All I wanted was to bow hunt that farm

That must have been the caretaker after Mike retired as caretaker? Mike was never worried about getting fired, he pretty much called the shots for Fred Werhan as far as hunting went there, and Mike worked as caretaker for Fred for 30 years, then retired to Florida. Matter of fact, the first time I asked Fred for permission to hunt, he told me to check with Mike, and if it was ok with him, it was ok as far as Fred was concerned. I spent many a pleasureable day hunting that property, and many a pleasureable Sunday afternoon at Mikes apartment on the property with my kids, talking with Mike and his wife Agnes, but that was easily 15 years ago.

But you and I are only talking about two of the many large bucks that were taken. We know the story about what it takes to bag a large wall hanger. It takes time, location, study of the area, knowledge of the area and the deer and most of all some luck to get it all together.Stop in any time.

Good Luck To All You Guys
