I had to work all week and didn't get out until today (Saturday) to cap off 6-day. Took me 20 or so minutes to find my stand at 4:30am in the dark (with my headlamp), but I finally climbed in and got situated by 5:30. No cars in the lot when I arrived at 4, but by 7 or so I heard a few shots in the distance. Overall I heard 5 or 6 groups of 2-3 shots each from 7am-10am. I was starting to get frustrated by 10 or so when all I saw were a few squirrels being annoying as usual. Out of the open field, however, I saw three deer slowly walking through and eating, in my general direction. I flipped my Primos doe call a few times and they perked up and started trotting directly towards me. They paused about 40 yards away until I did the call again and then they came running within 20 feet of me! I had them right there in my crosshairs...BUT they were all does and I didn't buy my permit for this winter since I'm having surgery Dec 30 and probably won't make it back into the field. They stood around for ten long minutes grazing right in front of me. I even turned around and shifted in my stand and they still didn't get spooked! I toyed with them by flipping the call a few more times and all they did was look up at me for 2 seconds, then continue eating. I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity, had I purchased the permit. For my first day out deer hunting, ever, I could have bagged a sweet doe if I wasn't foolish about the permit situation. All three of them were beautiful, too. From now on I'm buying the permit even if I'm not going to hunt after 6-day. I'm still burned up about it! Eventually, I got bored of watching them tease me and I flipped the can 10 times in a row until they started paying enough attention and then eventually walked off back into the field. What a bummer, but it was still an adrenaline rush and a really fun day, nevertheless! Plus, it makes for a cool story and a great learning experience! __________________ NRA Life Member

| kwadz, sounds like a good morning. Good to see you had sucess with that primo's doe caller I bought one as well. I didn't even get out during the 6 day due to work and money. I hunted in PA during their season. No luck didn't even see a deer. I am going to get the permits for bow and shotgun in the New Year. Well good luck with your surgery. I see your a member of pistol people. I have been looking around for a club. Haven't joined one yet. I like pistol people because they are cheap and their dues go down the 2nd and 3rd year. What can you tell me about them? How do you like it? Is it crowded? Can you get a lane when you go? Sometimes places that are cheaper than most are overly crowded. Thanks | ||

thanks, njsportsman. I hear you on having trouble even getting out there. I was lucky to get the one half day that I did.
Thanks - surgery should go well - I have a deviated septum and having it fixed should make it easier to breathe while wearing my blaze orange mask that only exposes my nose and eyes while in my stand! Pistol People is an awesome place. As long as your a decent guy and don't try to bullsh!t them around, both owners (Steve and Linda) are awesome people. You can't find a better price for a range if all you care about is indoor pistol. There are no bells and whistles, but the way I see it, there won't be any bells and whistles in my house (other than my alarm system, of course) when someone breaks in at 3am and I have to put my training and practice to use. My wife and I normally go around 6 or 7pm on weeknights and we've never had to wait for a lane. Also, when you join as a member, you're really treated like family. Get to know Steve and Linda and you literally walk in, sign in, and walk out to the line (after receiving a hearty handshake from Steve). If you bring your own gun, ammo, and target, you can really control your costs, too. There have been nights where we were the only people there and nights where almost all of the lanes were full. It seems to be hit or miss, but we love it there. My wife is in withdraw since she's pregnant and can't shoot until the baby's born.
If you go there, tell Steve that Nick and Christina said hello. He knows us. Oh, and if you're not a member, you can go and pay per hour initially to see if you like it. We did that the first time and signed up the next time we went. Oh - and for families it's great since it's only $25 to add on a family member, too. Let me know whether you go there and if you like it! __________________ NRA Life Member

| kwadz, thanks for the info, Still not sure what I am going to do as of yet. The places around here are a rip-off one in particular who I won't mention. I bought a gun from them they were liars and deceiving and not to mention about $80 higher than others. Being new to buying a handgun in New Jersey they saw me coming and took complete advantage of it. Never again will I go there. There range is beautiful but, they want like $300+ to be a member. I want to able to shot high power rifles as well. If I join Pistol People and Fort Dix I will still be ahead of the game. Good luck with your child who is on the way and Godspeed to you and your wife for a safe and healthy delivery. | ||

Thanks for the best wishes on the pregnancy, njsportsman.
The prices at the NJ ranges were what scared me off, as well. I had the same idea on Ft. Dix + Pistol People so that I'd be able to shoot anything. FYI, Pistol People does not allow .50 cal or .44 Magnum, so if you use either of these, you'd have to go to Ft. Dix for them, too. It's definitely nice to be able to shoot pistol indoors during the winter. __________________ NRA Life Member

It was pretty crowded. Between deer drives, solo hunters, and groups of hunters, there were probably 20-30 people out there and it's only 1.5 sq mi or so (I think). But the deer have to keep moving, so it's not entirely a bad thing! __________________ NRA Life Member
