NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / Wildlife Management / Deer Don't Like My Mineral Blocks?
Posted:  26 Oct 2009 11:01 AM
I've read about guys stuffing a mineral block in a stump, then pouring the molasses all over and then about how deer "rip it apart".  Also read about the same method but using a shallow hole instead.  One guy even talked about deer tearing apart the same spot a year later!

So I've tried both methods and the ground is torn up everywhere I poured molasses, but the mineral blocks aren't even touched.  Any reason why the deer aren't "ripping it apart"?

PS I know there are deer there because I spook 'em everytime I come out!

willemo....  I am in the same boat as you..  I have put 3 different brands out in out of state location and nothing.  I have come to the conlusion that if you don't put these in a high trafficing deer area like in the middle of the deer run, they won't go after it.

I'm a bit puzzeled because this section of the woods has not really been hunted in years.  The signs of deer bc of sppoking and as well major runs worn down are there but at the same time... I have had my trail cam out for 2 weeks and only got a picture of a back half of a beer.  I have alot of positive thoughts of this spot but.......

I have put acorn rage, the salt rock, and now other blocks from HS out with no pictures or results.

I really think I need to dump a dump truck full pf apple mash or something...

I have had success with the trophy rock and the 50 lb trace mineral blcoks you can get at any feed store.  The trace mineral block work well and give you a larger longer lasting product at half the price.

Deer utilize mineral licks mostly in spring and summer but I have pictures of them licking the block at all times of the year.  If you are trying to hunt over some sort of bait, you are much better off hunting over corn, apples or some other form of feed.  At this time of the year they looking to pack on the pounds.

Yeah, but at least I'm seeing deer!  Your problem may be that back half of a beer and someone screwing your spot up!

The deer have responded to molasses and even corn, but they won't touch the mineral block even when it's soaked in molasses!  I'll go with what works, but it would be nice to have something that lasts a little longer.  I was just curious to see if anyone else had the same problem.

You're about 7 months too late !!

Deer seek minerals just after first green, in the spring.

During the spring, natural foliage and crops are green, thus, they contain high amounts of water. Minerals balance out the diet of a whitetail.

So, deer will seek out minerals during the "green" months. Once the fall sets in, minerals are no longer a desirable addition to a deer diet.

I will say, however, I have seen deer briefly stop at a mineral site in the early winter months.

Start your mineral sites near water, and, in an area deer naturall feed(oak flat, briars, honeysuckle, etc. etc.)

Do this in the early months. Drop a 50lb trace mineral block over some decaying timber/stump. Cover with powdered mineral, soak with water and let it sit.

I have the same deer[trail cam] on mineral sites year after year. When they find minerals, seeing how they are rare, they will continue to return, year after year.

I probably have 15 different mineral sites. They all get torn up. Do yourself a favor and donthunt over the site, as you want deer to become comfortable in this area and return, continuously.

Simply throwing a salt lick block on the ground wont do much. Timing, and, more importantly, location, are the ticket.

Good luck.

I put out two 40 lbs bags of 30-06 from The whitetail Institute back in the spring. It was along a heavy trail and I sprinkled corn over it so the deer would stop.

I checked until July and never once did they go for it.

Try a Bag-R-Buck, I had some luck with them until the bears ripped them down. I also put out a mineral block several years ago. The deer never touched it but a bear ate it in one sitting, he must have been pretty thirsty afterwards.

I bought the loose mineral salt and disovled it in buckets of hot water. then I poured it straight on the ground, deer tore it and every piece of vegitation where I poured it. It was in the spring through summer though when they needed it for antler and bone growth. after that I switched to plain loose white salt. I had to start bringing a rake with me to rake the soil back where they would "dig" to get to the salt.

Perhaps the deer in your area have enough minerals and they don't need it.You ever hear of kids eating dirt when they need certain minerals? perhaps it is the same with deer, if they don't need it they won't eat it. try  mixing a container of salt(like mortans) in 5 gallons of water and dumping it on the ground to see what happens. that way if it don't work your not out of that much money.
