How can we get rid of the early muzzleloader season on Ft. Dix and bring it in with the same 2 early days of the state ?? Any suggestions , that week is killing all our buck population , we can still use the bow that week.

To my knowledge the biggest bucks are harvested during that week on Fort Dix.  Why wouldn't you want to take advantage of that?

I personally love the way it is plus you can still bow hunt that time of year if you dont ml hunt.

The problem is too many bucks are being killed that week. Last year only 35 bucks were checked in and I hunt Fort Dix very hard and ride around year round spotting deer and its hard to find a nice buck around anymore unless your inside the fence and majority of us can't take advantage of hunting inside the base. Everyone will see the toll that season is taking on the deer herd , if the old 52 and all 37 was open then all the hunters wouldn't be bad , but we can't keep over killing bucks in the same open areas year after year.

I do admit I love muzzleloader hunting and last year on opening day took a nice 9 pointer , but for real if you talk to all the regulars that hunt fort dix faithfully I think we would all agree the buck pop is down big time.

I saw 4 bucks on Dix today all 70 yards away, and 2 others on 2 separate scouting trips.  This is my first year hunting Dix though, so I can't comment either way.

i believe the base commander controls the rules on the base and i dont think the state has much say. ive hunted the muzzleloder season since like 94. its a neat deal to be able to during the rut. fort dix was also the first to implement the points rule for better quality management. fort dix is vast and the impact area is off limits. there are some big bucks.the acorns are heavy this year. deer dont gotta move much.there is also high point state park with the early muzzleloader season.i wish they would open up more early muzzleloader seasons.

Fort Dix is a federal property not state property so they can make what every seasons or rules that they want. They would never get rid of the early muz in a million years because that is the hole bases favorite time to hunt.

I do have a muzzleloader permit for Dix, and a bow permit as well.

you guys dont have a clue there to much  cash being made on hunting permints for range 14 thats why it will never chage some 1 is pocketing the cash that person runs every thing and we no who that is that person is why we are losing so many buck but as hunter we should not shot does during that week and late muzzloader and bow ther are to many does being killed
Posted:  19 Oct 2009 4:33 PM
If you guys want to end the early season, you had the right ideal last year. You will have to petition the decision makers. Starting with Ernie, the environmental dept.  then up the chain to Base Commander, get together make your statement, get all that agree to sign your statement,2 or 3 of you go in and state your case. I agree all things are taking a toll on the deer heard, early season is a prim factor, the killing of unlimited does after and during the rut, and coyotes are playing their parts as well. If you want it stoped then run with the ball.....

i dont think its a bad idea.its only 5 days and the amount of guys hunting after the first day isnt bad at all.i usually go 2 or three days that week.only killed 1 good one in 6 years.its a good place plenty of room for  guys,i never came across another hunter while on stand.i like the 3 point rule saves alot of young bucks

Note frt dix was closed down for about 2 years when we were on alert. So all of the bucks got to grow. I hunt muzzleloader at the base and realy look foward to the early season You just gotta let the little ones go so they can grow. If your looking just to fill youre freezer W/ meat you should by a cross bow & SHOOT THE DOES I also think its a bad idea it is only 5 days .

I say just shoot every damn deer you see , then in a few more years when we see each other and ask why we have no deer we can relate back to now. Hell who knows if you will be able to hunt Ft. Dix anymore in the next few years.
Posted:  19 Oct 2009 10:06 PM
you cant shoot every deer you see bucks have to have 3 on 1 side, when it was 52 and 37 guys in there were killing small spikes and 4 points in 37 and checking them in for being killed in 52 where there wasnt a point restriction.but they fixed that problem making it all zone 37.

Why do you need a cross bow to shoot does?

By making fort dix all 37 with the point restrictions did not stop anything. I sure as hell have not seen where that 3 point rule has made bigger bucks on the fort. The guys still shoot the smaller ones and check them in off base or just take them home.

I started hunting fort Dix when i was 14 in 1979, when fort Dix was FUN to hunt, there was deer everywhere... In 1986 i started deer hunting fort Dix with the ML, We have killed to many deer of fort Dix in the past few years whether it be by the ML season or shotgun season. especially doe days where in a single day out of 3c 23 deer were killed from guys driving the pieces... take to 2A for instance we hunters that pass on the deer within the antler guide lines will only have that same deer killed by the guys coming from the farm that hunt fort Dix illegally. they are not bound by the same guidelines we are... they also like to post the county swamp that is not their property..they also increased the quota on permits add the fact the in line muzzle loader is more reliable then ever and you get a big harvest... throw in the revenue they are taking in with the permit to hunt fort Dix then most people want a place to shoot their gun add in that cost and its a cash cow... then there are the people that hunt there that are taken care of that you will never see standing in line waiting to get checked out or in, but are always in the woods.... like i have said i have been hunting fort Dix since we use to have the MP's checking us in at the old little building with the plastic tags and wire them to our license and would ride my bike from browns mills to Taylor's mountain to hunt pheasants, man they were the days!!!!

well IBOWHUNT2 i was just in 2c today with my feet wet like i always am and did not see a deer... not even a track were i have killed some of my bigger bucks.. very disappointing... found a permanent stand that wasn't there two years ago no markings maybe they saw the good bucks....guess they come in from the browns mills side with out checking in and paying there dues...And i have been running those woods along time. if you grew up in the mills you probably know me

Iam telling you all Fort Dix is hurting , too many good breeders are getting killed with the early muzzleloader. I aspeak with all the Fort Dix regulars and no one is see many deer and no big ones at that.
Posted:  02 Nov 2009 5:47 PM
You guys are talking about permanent stands and seeing people that are not fort dix hunters on fort dix are you writing down plate #'s and turning them in? do you call the DOD police and report them?? Permanent stands are not allowed in the state much less fort dix knock them down, report them, ask around if we know who is using them we will talk to the owners. Don't take the law in your own hands but stand up for what you got, file your complaints, call the police, you have to do something if you want to see a change,

It always nice bow hunting the RUT tho !
Posted:  02 Nov 2009 6:27 PM
BIG RED , ITS TIME TO GET RID OF ALL THE ASSHOLE HUNTERS OFF THE FORT !!! TURN ALL THE IDIOTS IN , ESCPECIALLY THE ONES WHO DONT GET THE PERMITS !!! I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE STATE CHECK THE DEER IN DURING THE EARLY MUZZLE SEASON!!!
Posted:  02 Nov 2009 6:41 PM
well lets look at this logically.. they dont drive a vehicle onto fort dix when they can walk across the road or walk from the farm on to the property.. so that pretty much kills the idea of "writing their plates down" And I would imagine that if i were going to hunt a piece that i knew i wasnt surpose to be on i would check to see first by making a simple phone call to fort dix range 14 to find out if it was open. if it is open i dont hunt it... if it is closed i would be in there... thats from the view of a person that would be hunting 2c illegally of course. so asking around or talking to the person in the tree is out of the question. as for taking the stand down that is a great idea. the night before muzzleload season comes in.  his facail expression will be priceless on opening day

The primary mission for Fort Dix is military training.  I suppose ideally they would wish all the deer to be hunted to extinction to reduce the risk during military training.

Less deer running across the road causing convoy accidents means fewer LODs filed by the military.

I do like hunting Ft. Dix.  Especially when I get the permits from the post for free!

Personally, I'm no trophy hunter, so I could care less for bucks.  I've always harvested does.

i say it is pretty good for the people who have the permit, I mean you get to hunt with the ole smoke pole during the rut!!! I will be out there monday morning!!!
