Had 5 does come in and then a small 6. He was grunting and following the does. He made a few scapes and rubbed the crap out of a sapling right in from on me!
Pretty cool.

I grunted in a small 6 over the weekend. I also had a small 8 following a scent trail I put out. Both got a pass. It's definitely started up for the youngsters. The older bucks shouldn't be too far behind.

we're a whole month away from the rut..Make note though of where your best action is over this week and possibly next week... cause 1 month from then it should be hot in there when the does come back into heat..(28 days later I think)

I agree, I should have clarified what I meant in my previous post, pre-rut activities are starting up.

Very exciting. Pre-rut can see some bruisers hitting the ground.

For the past 2 days I've notice some smaller bucks dead on our highways.  That's always a sign to me that the pre-rut has begun.  Rubs and scrapes for nearly a week now as well up north.

Its just deer being deer...not the rut. Pre rut behavior is normal this time of year.

when bucks are laying on the side of the road...usually the rut is beginning or happening...when i saying laying on the road i mean when you start seing quite a few

Every year this starts around here in the beginning of October.  The rut is not starting.  The mornings are getting a little cooler and the action will pick up but that doesn't mean the rut is here.

Correct, but I think a lot of hunters call the pre-rut "the rut" even if it is just semantics.  Bottom line is it's the pre-rut and the bucks are rubbing and making scrapes and I'm seeing plenty (10+) of dead, younger bucks in the past 2 days hit along the major roads around me.  And I haven't been driving too much during that time. This seems normal in this area of the state every year.  I often see the younger bucks begin to display rut-like behavior before I see the bigger bucks doing this.

No does in season yet, that's for sure.  But it won't be long now

I wouldnt all out rattle yet... but tickeling tines and a couple of gurnts could bring in a buck...

As for doe in heat scent...it could work and it may not...what you hve to worry about is does shying away from it...this time of the year.. coulod it work yes....

I walked out to my mailbox yesterday and a spike buck was literally behind the (sparse) bushes 8 feet away from me in the neighbors yard.

I just watched him the whole time and he trotted away(he had to walk past me) after a loud truck went by.   He made a noise once but that was it.  Didn't seem particularly bothered by me or in a hurry to get anywhere.

I saw a nice six tearing up a bush 100 yards from my stand.  It was quite a sight!
