If you've seen how many of them are running around the Del. Water Gap You would understand that they do have and have had a large impacted on fawn, young turkeys and Pheasant survival . You should see  all the piles of  fawn bone at the back of the horse farm where I hunt.

I guess you don’t see many by you, but rest assured there numbers are large in most parts of the state.

I guess if they don’t effect the hunting in your area you think they don’t effect anyone.

yea, come hunt in zone 18 and look at what the coyotes do to youg deer and turkeys...its getting out of hand...its getting so bad over the past few years that the coyotes have been reproducing with pet dogs...ive seen a few run around the woods that look like they are half coyote/half german shepard...its getting really bad

Del. Water Gap
I've hunted up there since 1997, and I have seen 3 in that time span.

This could be the reason why the deer herd has dropped by alot up there. I would like to get one, but it's not like I go out for them only

The one I shot must have been very stupid. I saw him at 100 yards. I squeaked with my mouth and he turned in my direction. I drew way before he got to me . He actually walked to within 15 yards and sat down broadside. Luckily I was at full draw and he ran 30 yards after the shot and dropped.

don't kill them and won't kill them. Why is everyone so obsessed with killing them, and I don't want to hear "um Duh because they kill the deer and turkeys" because hunters wipe out a hell of a lot more deer then yotes or any other animal ever will, especially the morons with the " if it's brown it's down" mentality. Lets hear it,fire away.

dbuck, this is kinda f-ed up! this the second time i think im actually agreeing with you.  i understand the damage then can do, and im sure there are places in jersey were there are way too many.  but i also think once someone sees one, they overeact and think there is a problem.  during our town hunting meeting the other day, everyone was so worried about the coyote problem, eventhough only a few people have actually seen them.  i also kinda find it weird this kil kill mentality. with that said, if i had a good chance at one id shoot it, but where i hunt right now i dont think there is a real problem.

I see plenty,I let them all walk. I've had them lay down, play, stalk and eat mice right under my stand

What has effected my hunting a hell of a lot more than yotes are city boy "hunters" when they opened the state land next to my private land about 8-10 years ago and they would  shoot anything that moved,2 guys found 3 dead bucks on our property this year after the season while shed hunting, and where did the come from? the state land of course, because these so called "hunters" take 100-200 yard shots and never follow up on the deer,I have witnessed it too many times. Then they just jump in their car and head on back to the city.

Whoa...(twilight zone theme playing)

Bukrun,I don't shoot them because I was brought up to respect nature, let nature take care of it's own, and if you don't eat it then don't kill it.

i agree 99.9% this time. but i do feel we have a part in taking care of predator populations, even if we dont eat the meat.  i wouldnt eat coyote either, which is why i dont go after them.  but if one offered a shot, i think id take it

Why do some states leave the the season open all year?
Posted:  08 Mar 2006 7:25 PM

I don't know what to say if I didn't know better I would think you feel you’re the only hunter in New Jersey.

And what you call the city boys are your fellow hunters. Like you’re some big deep woods country boy. You live in the Jersey suburbs for God sakes.

I would guess they didn't want to tresp [no swearing please] on your land which is the law. Ever think they tried to get permission to access your land and maybe didn't know were to go or maybe you weren't home even at the time. And there is the possibility they lost the deer.
And please Don't try and tell me you never lost a deer.

I hunted bears three times in New Brunswick, Canada, they want the coyotes taken out. There are parts of that area where the deer herd is so low there is NO HUNTING for them allowed, and they say it's all from the coyotes
Posted:  08 Mar 2006 7:39 PM
1shot,  i saw two this year and my father saw 1.  in the beginning of the season we were seeing what we thought were dog tracks with no people tracks with them, thought there were some loose dogs running around. turns out it was the coyotes.  if there is "a problem", i doubt it.  but they are back there.  the guy who runs the hunt tried to say he sees them almost everytime hes in the woods, which is a bunch of b/s.  but so is alot of stuff that comes out of that guys mouth

Good Point !

That's what happens when you don't keep all specie of wildlife in there proper carrying capacity within the area they live. It's not like we haven't learned this from past experience. It's called Wildlife Management

I've seen 3 while hunting here in NJ, 1 while driving on Rt.15, and saw one in Canada after I took my bear, and I had no clear shot

They are not as easily killed as you would think or be lead to believe .I see a lot of them in the Del.Water Gap. and have only killed Two. So there in no great danger of an overkill happening.

Drop, where you hunt up at the GAP? I'm between the Digmans & Milford Bridge.

The one I saw in Canada, I already took my bear, and walked out to the logging road waiting for my guide to pick me up, mad my bow about 10 yards from me, for what I don't know, and here comes a blonde coyote, stopped and looked at me, he was 10 yards away

That maybe,

I can't speak for others. I can only express why and how I feel about them. And the damage I see caused by the numbers of them on the property I hunt.

BHC I have a large assortment of spots I hunt at the Gap.

My favorite spot, the one mentioned as "the horse farm" I've hunted for at least 20 years it has just been turned over to the Federal government to become federal hunting land. The owner - leaser has retired and moved into town. It's not far from Walpack and one of the mountain that runs across from it is part of Stokes State Forrest. It is wooded bordered with hedge rows and big fields surrounded by Federal land.

I know I read it on a post somewhere also hunt down your way now and then off Old Mine Rd. Nontypical-Pete and I have been hunting up there together I couldn't even tell you how many years. Some day we'll have to all meet up and do some bow hunting or Muzzle loading hunts together, maybe get some montain drives together.

Question, my nephew and I just got our trapping license this year. We have gotten fox in years past trapping with ther people. Any suggestions on how to get a Yote? Also do Yotes cower when you approach them like a fox or do they try to attack.

I hunt the Culver's Gap area of Stokes,  zone 4, and there is no real coyote problem killing off the deer here. There are a few around though.  My dog tangled with a coyote that had mange last year. On rare occasions I have heard them   howling and yelping in packs.  It seems like they move through from time to time.
Foxes are making a comeback.
