Some years back, in a coyote rich year in my favorite woods, during my late summer scouting I noticed that almost no does had fawns with them.  Back in the spring and early summer, most of the coyote scat that I found had fawn hair and, often, hooves in it.  It was clear that the yodeldogs were wreaking havoc on the deer population.  If I got the chance I would try to reduce their numbers.  This was shortly after it became legal to shoot coyotes in bow season.

On opening morning of bow season, the three does that I was hunting busted me in the tree so I decided to leave my stand sneak the high rocks in hope of getting a clean look at something coming up to bed down.  As I came to the toe of a high ridge I noticed an archer in a tree about 40 yards down the hill.  He was facing away from me.  Just then he stood, drew his bow, and loosed an arrow that made a big clink - but no stink.  He was a lefty.

I moved off along the hillside trying not to disturb his hunt.  I hadn’t gone very far at all when a coyote came bounding up the hill right at me.  As I drew my bow he stopped at 25 yards to scan the hillside.  He was quartering toward me.  The release came….the arrow went in behind his right shoulder and exited in front of his left rear leg.  He hit the ground yipping and snapping at his side.  I looked over at “Lefty” and his eyes were big as pizza pies.    I quickly put another stick on the string and, with the coyote snapping at his side offering only a head shot, I put my wasp tipped XX75 right through the top of his head.  The yipping stopped.  Lefty’s eyes were on stalks like a lobster now.

I quickly and quietly ran up, got my coyote, and brought him around the mountain to skin him out.  When the first arrow exited it took a couple of loops of intestine out with it.  That is what the coyote was snapping at.  I found those intestinal loops in his throat - severed cleanly by his teeth.  Last that I saw Lefty…… he was tracking the blood drips from when I moved the coyote.  I guess that he was trying to find me.  That day, at that time, I was not in the woods to make friends – though I usually am.   I went on about my hunt without talking to the guy.

Several years later I met a guy in the woods.  His name is Kenny.  I noticed that he carried a left handed bow.  We talked.  It was him.  We are friends now.

I prepped the skull as a memento.

Me and the girls out sunny fishin' at the Oradell reservoir circa 94'.  Good times.  You should see these two nailing fluke and blues on a jetty these days.
