To begin with, I am primarily a meat hunter who also tries very hard to practice deer/buck management on my properties.  I have not taken any deer yet this season from my spot in Washington, so I opted to hunt there this evening.  In the last few minutes of light and legal hunting time, I saw this deer coming in with two smaller ones and made my first ever mis-identification of a deer.  I thought for sure that I was shooting a large doe, only to find out after I dropped him in his tracks, that he was a shed buck.  Given a choice, I would not shoot a shed buck intentionally, but no deer will ever go to waste in my house, and I am thrilled that I once again was able to execute a great shot which required no tracking.

Damn looks like a big deer too!  Good job though!  I'm sure he'll taste good.  What'd he weigh?

The check station/butcher didn't weight him and I didn't have an opportunity to, but he was every bit as big as the 108 doe from two weeks ago(Picture Below).  His pedastals weren't that big though, so he wasn't any monster buck, that's for sure.

Good one Robin....I think he is a tad bigger than the doe.  Funny how he is bigger in the chest and shoulders and the doe is bigger in the "hams"....I guess that some things are just universal - and so it should always be.

Awesome Ms Grit... just awesome And don't worry about shooting a shed buck. They wouldn't be made of meat if you weren't supposed to shoot em & eat em

What gauge H&R are you shooting there... a 12ga or a 20ga?  And what kind of slugs?

way to go!  As you said, it will not go to waste!  You can't eat the antlers, but they do help stir the pot.....

Go find the sheds off him now. Years ago I accidently shot a shed buck and ended up finding both sheds from it and screwed the antlers back on. Give it a shot you never know.

I am shooting the H&R 20, and using Hornady SST's, 250 grain, although I have to honestly say that I still prefer the Mossberg 12, but it's a much heavier gun.

Sorry you don't agree with my ethics 11pointer, but my responsibility as a hunter is not to you, but to myself and to the law, and as I have held true to both, then I am comfortable with the decisions I make when I am in the woods

Nice going Robin. Glad your filling the freezer.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard

I agree. I depend on Jan and Feb to fill my freezer. I can go through a deer myself just in burgers.
If given a choice I would shoot a shed over a doe any time, this way the doe provides me more meat and opportunities  for next year. I hunt in an AR zone so I must let the spikes and forks go.

Why?

Exactly.  If the deer comes by with or without his rack he's still going in the freezer. The date he gets shot doesn't matter to him.

Congratulations Robin. No matter what anyone says, if you hunt long enough you will sooner or later though not by design, shoot a buck that that has shed his rack, or a button buck. While I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting you, I have, from reading your posts come to realize that your ethics are excellent and your actions reflect the sprit of this sport which we all should strive to live up to. Nice shooting and a good deer. You have had a great year this year, which from what I can see, you have earned by the number of hours you have put in the field. Keep up the good work! I think you are not only an inspiration to other women hunters, but also a great example to us guys!

THIS IS WHY I HATE THESE LATE JAN./FEB. gun days!!!!!

I am NOT beating up on you Robin so congrats on a good clean kill and those wild nails wraped around a slug-gun drive me nuts too, but gee whats with this state.
