I found out some one (Bob)who is 18-19 years old moved out to Pennsy for a while, still keeping his NJ addy. Well while living out there he went to a store and bought a pistol type BB gun. Now he's living back in Jersey. I have an idea of the laws but don't study the ones that don't pertain to me. What are the ramifications and what can or should he do? I believe you need to be 21 to own or get a pistol Id. But can he legaly just keep it locked up in his house till he gets his paperwork or is it still illegal for him to own? Ps he said he ould have not done this if he thought it was illegal. You all know what I told him.

Have a relative hold on to it and in the mean time find out what he needs to do from his local police.

No problem.

Wouldn't the realitive also need an FID and Pistol purchasers permit to poses it also?  I told him to keep it locked up and  don't take it outside till he either moves out of state or gets a pistol purchasers permit when he turns 21.

His best bet is to keep it at a relative's house out of state or get rid of it. Not worth all the trouble he could get into for an air gun here in NJ. I think NJ even classifies air-soft guns the same as hundguns, even though other states have them on the shelves in the aisles at the local wal-mart.  All my friends that had air handguns in NJ got rid of them along time ago for the same reason. Not worth the hassle or running the risk of getting jammed up for something other states treat as a no big deal.

you need a pistol purchaser's card to buy a pistol in nj (bb or otherwise) but i do not believe that it is required to have one if you already own it.

i know that you can buy a bb gun (long gun) out of state and legally own it in nj.

Oh yeah ! You can run the risk of losing all your gun owning rights and firearm hunting privilages just for goofing off and shooting an airsoft gun on your front porch in NJ. There have been people in the news charged for it already here in NJ.

Here's just one of many like it:

Woke Up This Morning, Got Yourself a BB Gun
David Weigel | July 7, 2008, 4:16pm

Ryan Narcisco, a 20-year old mall clerk, might go to jail for keeping a BB gun in his car.

The gun, a Gamo P-23, was sitting under the rear window of the 2004 coupe. Looking like a larger-caliber handgun, the firearm drew a quick response from the bicycle-patrol officer who stopped Narciso for doing 40 mph in a 25-mph zone. With gun drawn, the officer arrested him.

Narciso's father, an architect, bought the pellet gun at a garage sale a few years ago to fend off squirrels that made their way into the attic of the families home on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Edison, the father and Narciso's lawyer, Amilcar Perez of Perth Amboy, said.

Under a new state law, Narciso's possession of the weapon qualifies as a Graves Act offense. Narciso could face what prosecutors and criminal defense attorneys call a "hard three," meaning three years with no prospect of parole.

How did the law get so strict? By accident.

With little or no fanfare, lawmakers stiffened the Graves Act in the last session. They folded the amendment into anti-gang legislation that Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed into law in January.

Now, the simple unlawful possession of any firearm can bring mandatory penalties for anyone who pleads guilty to or is convicted of that crime alone.
Narcisco might come out ahead in this—he's drawn attention to a boneheaded law and might not have to do the prison time. But the article, by Ken Serrano, has more examples of the law being misapplied.

I still can't get over the fact you need an FID for a bb gun To all of you that may seem normal because you lived here for so long but I got here from Florida like 2 years ago and my head is exploding!!!!!!!!!

I'm surprised you don't need a license to use kitchen knifes (which are more deadly than bb guns)

Pistol permits and NJ FPID's are only needed for PURCHASE.  If you purchase a firearm legally in an other state while living there you are legal.

HOWEVER, NJ law states you must be 21 to possess a handgun and NJ considers even BB pistols as a handgun.

Bottom line, don't get caught doing something stupid with it.

There is no process.  Just move in.  There is no mandatory firearms registration in NJ.
