Posted:  11 Dec 2008 8:37 PM
Hey fellow hunters, once again same old story..but I need peoples help. I just joined the club early this year and have been working very hard atleast 3-5 days every week putting up stands, corn, everything..and some guy snuck onto the property and killed a decent buck that i was after .. supposedly he checked it in at simon and peter and is bragging about how he snuck in and bagged it. Oh and if thats not enough, the way i found out was because I found all his garbage in the woods. (pairs of gloves) please if anyone knows anything let me know. thanks!

Keep the gloves, when you have a suspect, say that you have his gloves and the police are testing them for DNA evidence.  If he blurts out an excuse why he was on the land, there's your guy.

When I was in the club we had 300 acres or so posted in hopatcong..... It was at the end of a dead end road... I can't remember the name of the road off the top of my head??? I think it was Leo ave... It's across from the Hopatcong State Park and then up into some back roads.... I'm pretty sure the gate Me and my dad put up was at the end of Leo Ave..

The chester game club has a piece of property posted accross from the Sussex County Library on Sparta-Stanhope Road-just past Lenape Valley Highschool.

Problem with that area is that it borders a piece of public land. The Chester Game club piece is small and the state land piece is small. Both are adjacent to Hudson Farm (Giant piece). It's easy for anyone to hunt mid week and park in front of the public spot-walk in 100 yards and turn right onto the Chester Game Club piece. Moreover, deer don't know the property line and move back and forth freely. I've seen some nice deer coming out of both the public and private piece crossing the road while picking up my kids at the high school.

Without video surveilance, or active patrols-you will likely never get the guy.

Moreover-take what you hear with a grain of salt-whenever there is a nice buck killed there are always stories of how the deer was "poached" from private land. I'm not saying you don't have a tresspasser problem, but the guy would be an iddiot to paoch a deer a 1/4 mile from public land-and brag that he poached it

the deer was taken right smack in the middle. I found his gloves and remains of the deer's insides including hair. I know what you mean thoe but the property is pretty big and there is many posted signs, you cant miss them. I dont know it just stinks, we caught some guys scouting while we were in our trees and they ran out of the woods, so its not hard to find them as long as its gun season with the hunter orange. We saw a quad go in opening day and heard shots so that was probably him.

And yes at the end of leo, that connects to chester game's land.

Take the deer hair and send it to one of the CSI shows maybe they can test it and determine who your perp is

dsaint that piece is so overrun with people traffic its not funny.  between people walking there dogs in there kids walking home from school and kids and hunters in general those deer get blown out of there right to the houses and yards.  my point desaint is that the guy on the quad was probably not hunting just riding and although that property is posted pretty well the club members dont really patrol it all year round they only care during the season so the people over there that live in the area go in there most of the year and then now the club members are upset.you are right it is private  people should keep off but the club members should try and be more visible, maybe sending out a mailer notice to all properties maybe 2x a yearexplaining that the property is off limits.  i know ryan lives in the area and he can keep tabs on it but it is no one person job.  hey by the way ryan your club is way over posted on the vetrens field side according to the tax maps...just fyi

Could the guy have shot on public land and the deer died on your club?  I just think you will have a hard time proving anything unless you caught them in the act.

I was thinking the same thing. Say you're hunting the public land and shoot a slammer. It's mid week and the deer goes onto the private piece before dropping. We all know what the "right thing to do" is. But how many guys would simply go get their deer

1. good point that its not a one man job
2. guy on quad was out 7 in tmorning wearing hunter orange
3. over posted, on veterans side? So tresspassers cant say "Oh Dam I didnt see the posted signs"
4. Day after posted this i saw the guy walk onto the property right up to where he shot the deer maybe to clean up ( if that was him)
5. we arent upset, just dont want the spot being filled with 1000 guys and leaving the areat 0 deer.
6. and for MTH i argree with you 100%

I totally agree with that. It's amazing how many trucks w/small trailers you see along the road on any given Sunday.
